Selling my Xbox tomorrow and getting a PS3 in a few days. I don't know games I want to get. I am mostly into shooter games. Any suggestions on what to get? (Something cheap)

Uncharted 2, and to a lesser degree 1 & 3, are very enjoyable. The third left a slightly sour taste despite its plethora of impressive qualities, but the second is just terrific. Should be able to find the first two cheap.

Vanquish is on Xbox too, but whatever console it's the most exhilarating shooter of this console gen. Definitely could be found cheap.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are the second best reasons to own a PS3. You may or may not find them cheaply.

The best reason is Journey, which is as far from a shooter as you can get, but is IMO the best game the console has to offer. Cheap too!

Crysis 1 on PSN Store amazing

Crysis 2 on disc even better, look up trailers etc to see the famous nanosuit in action

    Battlefield Bad Company

    Battlefield 2

    Battlefield Bad Company 2

All these games have been out a while and are going cheapish :D

I finally played through Resistance: Fall of Man recently. It's getting on a bit now but I really enjoyed it and it managed to keep my interest longer than FPS games usually can. I'm looking forward to playing the rest of the series soon. Plus, being a Brit, playing a big budget shooter based in York and Bristol was weird.

I tend to prefer third person shooters. I'm playing Warhammer 40k Space marine at the minute. I picked it up online for £8 a couple of months ago and now that it's free for PS+ subscribers I'm sure you can pick it up for buttons preowned.

Warhawk is my favourite PS3 shooter, personally. Most of the community has migrated to Starhawk now though, which I have only played in Beta at the moment but I've heard a lot of good stuff about the final version.

For this question, I always suggest Infamous 1 and 2. Sandbox game with morality system. Play with good karma and you're being careful not to hurt any civilians by accident and have to be more precise in attacks. If play with Bad Karma, it's just go mad shooting/blowing up throwing anything and anyone. I remember for each game after the good karma playthrough, I went straight back and played the bad karma game the whole day or weekend. They're just fun!

When I got my ps3 I was in a similar situation to you, OP. I got a few brilliant games that I really enjoyed and picked them all up for buttons: batman arkham asylum, infamous 2, assassins creed 2, unchartered 2, dead space (or dead space 2 maybe - cant remember but picked it up for 6 euro somewhere and it was great).

Killzone 2 is the best PS3 exclusive shooter I have played. Didn't enjoy the third one so much.
    Uncharted 2 is absolutely essential.

As a counter opinion, I'd chime in that Killzone and Infamous are both appallingly bland and overrated franchises, and I would not recommend them to anyone. But then I am but one voice in a sea of many.

They are solid games. Not the system killer apps they are made out to be that I would run out and buy a PS3 for if I didn't own one. But for the prices they are at now on Amazon they are well worth a play through.

Only the Uncharted series stands out on the PS3 imo. For the OP, if you have a 360 already and are mainly into shooters, there is little to no point in getting a PS3. All the decent console shooters are cross platform and the 360 controller layout with its analogue design and stick pressure is better suited to FPS games in my opinion.

Yeah I'd agree with the Resistance and Uncharted series. 1&2 of each would be pretty cheap now. Absolutely love the Dead Space(s) but you can get that on the xbox anyway.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned, but buy the god of war collection and god of war 3. you'll probably pick them all up for less than 40 euro. Unbelievably good hack n' slash games.

I know you're mainly into shooters but give these a go, you won't regret it!

Killzones, Resistences, God of War are all great.

Another nice FPS is Turok and it can be gotten pretty cheap.

Crysis 2 is great as well, but I found the gameplay to not be as smooth as expected.

There is also the Call of Duty games who normally have a decent campaign to play.

    Valkyria chronicles is a must

    Demons souls

Battlefield 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for online multiplayer.

Also - Metal Gear Solid 4, great Action/Stealth.

Red Dead Redemption? Awesome game imho. I also love playing Batman Arkham City, both available on xbox

    Seeing you already have/had an Xbox (I presume 360?:p), my choices would be;

    First Person Shooters
    Bioshock 1 & 2
    Battlefield 3

The Bioshock series is excellent, alot other FPS pale in comparison with the story, detail and immersion in a game world.

    Other choices would include;

Fallout 3 & New Vegas (You don't need to know the backstory of Fallout 1 and 2 if you want to play 3, same as Vegas.)

They are a fine mix of FPS with Role-playing.

As well as the above - get Playstation Plus - there are some freebies you can download that are still available.

    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Infamous 2
    and a few more...

    Games
Resistance Fall of Man (2nd was pants have not tried the 3rd). - PS3 exclusive
Uncharted series (3 games - all just amazing) - PS3 exclusive
Dark Souls - but sign your life away
Demon Souls should be cheap now - but I preferred Dark Souls - think its a PS3 exclusive
Ratchet & Clank games - always good for a laugh though short - PS 3 exclusive
God of War games - bit of a button masher but good fun
Assassin's Creed - I really liked the first few - be warned though the missions do get repetitive but still good fun running around. - PS3 exclusive
    Orange Box (for Portal).
Portal 2 - quite a short game but fun.
Oblivion - aged a bit but still good.
Skyrim - nice open world game - had good fun with this but did eventually get a bit bored, looking forwards to getting back into it.
Fallout3 - personally I didn't enjoy it found the palette made seeing enemies difficult but quite a few folk seem to rave about it.
Crysis 2 - loved it but short (found it similar to Deus Ex in some ways but enjoyed the shooting action, will get Crysis 3 when it appears off the back of playing this).

    Assassin's Creed isn't a PS3 exclusive.

Define hardcore gamer, out of interest there...

I hope you spotted the sarcasm in my post! :p

Hardcore gamers are usually referred to as gamers who don't limit themselves to "popular" and "casual" games such as Fifa and Call of Duty, but instead play games of different genres and play games that require more skill and dedication to get through the game e.g. Demon's Souls.

If I was buying a PS3 and picking out games to play on it, COD and Fifa would be at the bottom of the list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭martineatworld

    Course I did.... Errrrr....!

What if they play Fifa religiously and aim to get to the top of the leaderboard though?! Would that not be hardcore gaming?!

My personal recommendations anyway would be...

    Resistance series
    Uncharted series
    Heavy Rain
    MGS 4
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Siren Blood Curse

Join Playstation Plus would be my main advice...

I did laugh at your comment. It is a bit of a snobby attitude though, especially around FIFA. There's plenty of skill involved in that game if you want to play online at any sort of decent level.

Completely agree, with the amount of free game available and the fact that they will change every month or so there is got to be something that you will enjoy.

Other than that just depends on the type of game you liked for xbox, in my opinion there aren't alot of games offering something different that the xbox doesn't already offer.
