Hi i installed xp pro on my friends dell inspirion 9400. Everything went well however the wireless network card didnt seem to turn on and scan for internet connections. We downloaded a intel driver thing from the dell website. This allowed us to search and turn on the the adapter. We changed the wireless settings to be controlled by windows. We then were able to connect to the modem but it said aquirring ip address. So i decided to set a static ip and this seemed to work however we are connected to the modem but not internet i.e sites wont load. We havent a clue what to do now.

Try connecting using a cable not using a fixed IP. If that works then the problem is with the wireless.

Make sure you are connecting to the correct wireless network and that the encryption is the same as on the router and that the wireless password is correct.

When you gave the wireless adapter a static IP address did you set the default gateway to the address of the router.

also did you provide DNS servers as well when you set up the static ip?

idealy what you should have is

    ip:192.168.1.x
    subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.1.254->that would be for an eircom router

    and use google dns servers
    8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

as the poster above said connect with a cable as that should rule in or out the wireless connection
