you need to format the disk in drive h before you can use it

    hey if anyone could help me out im really appreciate it

    today i finally upgraded from windows xp to windows 7 now i have a 1TB seagate external hard drive and every time i plug it in i get the message you need to format the disk in drive h before you can use it. it was working perfectly for the last year in any pc i plugged it into, there is no way i can format it as i have about 800gb of extremely important files can someone please help?

    Did the Seagate come with it's own driver and is there a W7 driver available for it?

    This can happen if the drive isn't "safely removed" and the file system becomes corrupted (which Windows is picking up so it requires formatting). You can try using TestDisk which may be able to get it going again, also you may need to use PhotoREC to manually recover the files. Once the drive itself hasn't gone faulty, you should be able to get most stuff back ok :)

    i will admit i haven't been the best at safely removing in the last week, i will try both those pieces of software and hopefully be able to get something back thanks very much nick and fsl yeah i have all proper drivers installed.
