just wondering if anyone agrees or disagrees. . .
is there any point to the IKC given that they don't police litters and all you have to do to register a litter is fill out a couple of forms. there are with out a doubt many dogs out there that aren't what their cert says they are. . .
after all a dog doesn't know if it's registered and if breeders are honest and not in it for the euro's then the quality of the litter should be what's important not a cert that doubles the price you can ask for a pup.
i am talking as someone who was a member of the IKC for over 5 years.

i wonder how closely related a dam and sire would have to be before they would NOT register a litter? they have zero interest in how badly breeds are being affected by close or in breeding for these 'show quality' or 'ftch, ftw' pups. as already said it's euro's.

i have yet to meet a dog that can read there papers

fair enough its nice to have the line that the dog has been bred from but plenty of cowboys out there to ruin the lines, once a dog will work papers wont make it any better

seen a litter of IKC reg cockers last thurs;)LMAO it was the most fake looking document i have seen yet, apparently they spilled coffee on it hahhaha papers mean Sweet F all,you judge a dog or bitch by their merits and not there paperwork.Id rather give them to good homes than having some scumbag get them. "Allegedly" ;) its the same as the dog licence!!! Just another money making scheme

What's involved in getting a dog registered? was looking at buying a thoroughbred springer and was told she has no papers, is there any way i can get her registered myself?

That's the whole point the OP is making. Yes you can is the answer although you are not supposed to be able to. The whole thing is a shambles in my opinion. Won't make the dog hunt any better either.

it all depends on how cynical you are , at the end of the day you have to take the mans word you are buying the pup/dog off if you can't don't won't believ him then why are you parting with hard earned cash , papers don't make them work any better but they don't make them worse either , if you have faith in the breeder then at least you have a written record of the breeding of your dog , that helps with breeding in the future if you want to go down that road
for descent honest breeders the ikc is really the only option afaik

The above are all good points. If I was buying from someone whom I know and trust, and have experience with, it would not make one bit of difference to me, however if I was buying off someone that I was not overly familiar with and they were asking top dollar I would be extremely suspicious if they had not "bothered" to register the pup. If I was planning to breed I would insist on registration.

Registration is no guarantee and you should do all the ususal checks (find out who they have sold to before and talk to them, see the pups at home and the conditions they are in, find out if all vacations up to date, hip scores and if necessary check with the Vet etc.). Anyone who holds themselves out to be an expert to breed pups, unless known to you either directly or through people you trust, should at least have the ability to do the paperwork but "buyer beware".

my main point is that if the IKC were interested in preserving the quality of breeds and not interested in turning a profit then they would police the registration of litters more carefully. we have all heard of how banjaxed the king charles spaniel is with prolapse of the brain. i bet that there are plenty of these registered. the same thing springs to mind when you see how much people demand for breeds such as pugs, douge bordoux's and huskies/akitas. before you know it every plonker has a pair of them selling pup's because of how much they paid for their pup.

it's nice to have your dog's lines and when you come across dogs in the future you can see if they have been bred from the same lines you have. but it comes down to one thing. HONESTY. on the part of the breeder. papers or no papers you are taking people at their word.

ive sold pups P.B.N.R. Becauce i couldnt be arsed doing all the paperwork , microchipping etc they are rough shooting dogs and all that does is add to the price of the pup , i had no trouble selling the pups and have had some very nice compliments about them , having said that if you are going to show your dog or trial it , it is a requirement that the dog is registered with the kennel club , some of the people who bought pups off me later on requested papers but when money was mentioned their enthuisam died off ....go figure
