No matter what beat up shed of a car you'll buy the insurance will be a killer - part of me would say forget the car , go out and enjoy yourself , you're too young to be slaving away at keeping a car on the road.

Agree with Delancey - spent too many of my 17-21 years trying to keep a heap on the road with tax, insurance and maintenance...keep the money and enjoy yourself, if you need to indulge the driving do what a friend of mines used to do instead, treat yourself to a weeks car hire here and there in a nice new car that you don't have to upkeep.

Yeah same as the above posts say dont get a car it will become a money pit before you know it, and you will be sitting in your car in your drive way while your friends head off here, there and everywhere having fun.

at 17 and on a provisional licence, I doubt there are any car hire companies that would hire to him.

What about buying the car and asking a family member to be the main driver and you as a named driver. You can pay for the policy, just use their name. If the car is only going to be worth a couple of hundred euro you will only need third party - little point in paying more in insurance than the car is worth.

Either way you will need a qualified driver in the car with you where ever you go - so it might not offer the freedom you hoped!

What about getting a moped or something?
