NCT Query

If the NCT is up on a car since Jan 12 and it passes the passes the NCT in Aug 12, will it be valid until Aug 13, or only valid to Jan 13.

Jan 13, you can't extend the next NCT cert. by delaying taking the test.

Remember: your NCT certificate will expire after the registration anniversary date regardless of when you take the test so there is no advantage in delaying it.

Does the same rules apply if the car has changed hands?
Reason i ask is that i may be buying a car which the NCT has expired in Jan. I got a mate who is a mechanic to take a quick look at it and he said it had no major problems for what he had checked.

As a matter of interest....what happens if you buy a car which has had no NCT for more than a year?

Depends on the age, assuming this is 10+ years if you were expecting a year cert.

If its missed an entire testing cycle, the cert is issued from the most recent missed test date.

Sorry but i am not sure what you mean. Take for instance that i buy a car which was due to be tested on July 11....but for some reason the previous owner had the car lying idle. If i purchase the car and get it tested in July 12...when would it be due for its next test.

I am basing this on a car that is older than 10 year.

If you test it now, you will get cert valid until Jan 2013.
If you test it in October 2012 (90 days before due date) or later, you will get a cert valid until Jan 2014.

Absolutely stupid law IMHO.
