Holiday/flight cancellation before travel insurance taken out...

    Right, where to start. I booked an expensive last minute holiday 2 weeks ago and planned to arrange holiday insurance the day after (a few days before the holiday was due to start). Unfortunately there was a death in the family that very day (before I had bought the insurance!) and I had to cancel the holiday. That's bad luck I suppose but I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I might have had some cover through perhaps the fact that I booked the holiday with my credit card or maybe through some other avenue.

    I was starting the holiday with a Ryanair flight and bizarrely it turns out that they refund the fares if you cancel flights because of a family death. It just got me thinking that maybe there is some other way of claiming back some of the financial loss in this particular instance (family death) rather than via travel insurance.

    First up, sorry for your loss.

    Your credit card provider may offer some form of protection, usually (IF it is offered) it's dependent on the entire holiday having been booked and paid for using your credit card. The only way to be sure is to have a read of the T&Cs that came with your card or just ring their customer service helpline.

    Should add, as an aside: Some holiday insurance companies won't cover you for cancellation of a trip booked before the insurance was taken out. They'll cover you for accidents on the trip etc, but not for cancellation.

    Thanks mikedragon - it's a right mess (more-so than I've let on here) but I'll look further into the credit card avenue. It's ironic because I've never ever gone on a holiday in my life without travel insurance but always assumed if I ever needed to claim, it would be after the holiday had actually started. Let it be a warning to everyone - book the travel insurance the minute you pay for the holiday!

    Just on that score I find an annual policy the best as you're permanently covered (if you don't let it lapse) should anything happen (like in your case, sorry for your loss).

    Yes I understand this to be the case with all insurance. You're covered if the purchase date AND the travel date of the holiday falls within the cover period, not on the travel date alone.
