    Hi everyone,

just have a question about the no claims bonus, i had an accident 3 years ago and the insurance company paid for the other damaged car, and i fixed my car and sold it(only the bumper was damaged on my car so it didn't cost much to fix it), i have been insured on my parents car for the last year, and i want to buy my own car now, my question is: am i entitled for a 1 year no claims bonus or do i have to pay for the accident i had 3 years ago in order to be able to get my no claims bonus for the year,

thanks in advance for your help :)

I presume you lost your bonus when you had the accident three years ago. Have you built up any NCB by being insured in your own name since?

I was insured as a second driver on my parents car for 1 year and i did not make any claims, the only claim i made was 3 years ago when i had the accident

Some insurers take "Named Driver Experience" towards an NCB of sorts so depending on who you go with you should be entitled to a years named experience. Your 3 years NCB will be lost unless you've built any up on a policy of your own since.

Just a quick question about the no claims bonus. Say you were at fault in an accident and your insurance co payed out thus you lost your no claims bonus if you decide not to renew your insurance when the time comes and cope without a car for a couple of years will this period count towards building back up your ncb or would you have to had owned or been insured on a car to build up the ncb during this 2 year period

A no-claims bonus isn't like a criminal record, doing nothing doesn't get you brownie points! You have to have a policy in your name or (for some but not all companies) be a named driver on someone else's policy and have no claims in order to build up an NCB
