Corrosion issues with Corsa

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me with this issue on my 06 Corsa. About 6 months ago I started to notice a bit of rust staining on the driveway which I assumed to be coming from the brake discs as the car wasn't being used a lot at the time. During a recent oil change I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Anyway I had look under the car yesterday and found some serious evidence of corrosion which needs to be addressed. I suspect the battery is the culprit here- the "design" of the rain deflector means that water washes down through the battery area and I suspect that this run off is corrosive as the battery is not the sealed no-maintenance type. There is evidence of a powdery residue on the alloy engine parts which would support this theory methinks. The battery is just a year old but I believe if I had gone for a sealed type instead none of this would have happened. What do I need to do here to rectify this- this car is up for NCT in August, I'm skint but can't afford not to look after this otherwise reliable little motor. Is this a DIY job ( I am handy and have a good toolkit) or would I be better off leaving this to a garage as access is tight anyway. Any help or advice much appreciated.

I'm not sure what the question is... but if it's what do I do with the corrosion, then all you can do is treat it and minimise the damage it's done.

    Some suggestions:

    1. Move the battery and/or get it covered with some solid plastic material so ensure that the drain isn't pouring directly over the batter (that's a seriously bad design by Opel) - Make sure the battery can breathe though!! Don't wrap it in plastic.

    2. Treat the corroded areas. Do this by removing lose material and lightly sanding back and rust/corrosion that's there. Then I suggest you get some metal paint and pain the areas. This will help to reduce any further corrosion or exposure to the elements.
