Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows is there a requirement by the DES that junior and senior infants classes must have 2 breaks a day i.e. one small break and one big break? My childrens' school is changing the school day in September and this was the reason given, it seems strange to me.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know of any school that doesn't give their infants 2 breaks to be honest.
Not sure of the actual requiremnets though.

Yes, they should have two breaks. When we were in our old building we had temporary permission not to have two full breaks, as there was no access to the school and very little yard. Once we moved we reverted to the two full breaks.

The school hours are 8:50 to 1:30. It used to be 1 o'clock with only 1 break. Staying in until 1:30 in order to have a half hour break seems strange to me. 11 o'clock break with half hour at 12:30 to go back for 30 mins just doesn't seem to make sense.

Yeah our school does that too. Just half an hour after lunch. I've always thought its pointless because again the children settle down after coming in there must not be much time before they have to start packing up. I've always thought the lunch should be earlier.

i couldnt teach junior infants for the day with only one break. having 2 breaks gives the children to give their little brains a rest for a while. they can clear their heads and go for a run around outside. it makes all the difference when they return into the room after breaktime. concentration spans are much shorter at that age too so its a lot to expect for them to sit down and work for two extended periods of time. plus a cup of tea/coffee at 'little break' is a godsend for the teacher most days too:)

local primary changed to this yrs ago. a WSE by the Dept highlighted that they weren't having the correct break times. from what I can remember at the time, we were told the 30min lunch break is needed to get the kids used to having a social time learning to eat and play wit their peers.
