Ryanairs whole business model is based on cheap airfares, they are hardly going to change that if they buy aerlingus. If they did, then a new low cost airline would come in and take all their business.

    monopoly
    monopoly
    monopoly

with the airport concessions aerlingus has ryanair will not have to compete ,and any new competion would be squeesed..

buy the board game....i`m sure m.o.l. has!!!

I wouldnt be depending on ryanairs policies or mol`s good nature.

RYANAIR is cheap only in competitive times, try book a ticket to matches

Ryanair wasn't squeezed when aerlingus had a monolopy and it cost us 300 sterling for a single flight to Manchester during the 90's. The likes of easyjet would come in and clean up if they raised prices. Also we are in the middle of the worst recession we have ever experienced, ryanair and aerlingus are barely making profits as it is, if they raised prices they would go bust. Its that simple.

And if this bid was successful, which it won't be because our government are gombeens, ryanair would become the largest airline in the world within a few years. Imagine flying to the states for 200 euro return- would be brilliant.

Might be worth taking a punt on ryanair on the off chance the EU put pressure on our gombeens to accept this offer.

I am all for cheap flights but i do not believe the brilliant mr m o leary will give me a cheap one unless he has to.

Ryanair shares not that cheap at mo but good buy anyway!

And lastly my belief is that we are closer to the end of this recession than the begining....hence all the takeovers...which would leave price increase`s acceptable and bust companies few and far between!!

tried to buy 500 shares of aer lingus on my td waterhouse internet account but was denied

forgive my ignorance but are aer lingus shares restricted to long term holders due to the fact that the state has a significant role

learned this morning from TD investing that you cannot buy irish airline shares online , you have to do it over the phone , brokerage had closed by the time id heard of this takeover bid yesterday evening and i was unable to buy

not often an opportunity like this comes along

    the bump has passed

At the AGM EI announced they'd pay a 3% dividend. Anyone know when this is due to happen and when you had to be a shareholder to get the dividend? Holding shares at the moment and thinking of offloading them but trying to work out the level of fluctuation in share price I can tolerate and the dividend is obviously one consideration.

Come on will ye! Ryanair isn't cheap only. Yes it offers cheap fares some times but not all times. Ryanair is pretty good at screwing passengers especially when we're it is realted to travelling to big sporting events etc eg euro 2012. Penal vulgar pricing and feck the traveller.

Ryanair is very successful at what it does well, but I would prefer to have another Irish based alternative to just a 'bums on seat' approach to air travel.

During the big events demand vastly outweighs demand, hence the higher prices. People are willing to pay higher prices these times, otherwise these flights would be empty.

What other Irish alternative is there? Aerlingus are a terrible outfit who offer the same service as ryanair but charge 30% more on average. Their unions control the business so they'll never be competitive.

Ryanair on the other hand would be able to become the biggest airline in the world if they got aerlingus. What a success story that would be for Irish business.

    Like bloody well who?

Perhaps you are not old enough to remember when we were incarcerated on this go* forsaken island, while Aer Lingus and its dodgy Government backed cartel rode the lost of us blind. £350 plus flights to Rome in the 1980's.

over 200 punts ( over 2 weeks average wage) for a flight to london in the 80s, Aer lingus rode everyone.

For the year to last March, Ryanair made a record profit of €503m, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18141549 so even if they raised prices its hard to see how they would go bust. Aer Lingus are making losses though, its just a question of how long that can continue.
