I think myself, the missus and the one year old are gonna head via ferry to wales for a week over the summer at some stage.
Does anyone know of some place that is interesting enough, a few restaurants, bars, leisure facilities and accommodation within a couple of hours drive of Fishguard or holyhead?
Something like a Welsh Butlins or something like that.
The next few years are gonna be drives over to the UK so better start here.

Welsh Butlins? The former Butlin's at Pwllheli is still there, now a Haven Holiday camp. See http://www.haven.com/parks/north-wales/hafan-y-mor/. Not really my sort of thing, so I have no experience of it.

There is also a traditional British seaside holiday resort at Llandudno (think Salthill, but on a far bigger scale). Again, not really my thing.

For me, the great appeal of North Wales is the mountain scenery, the trains, and the castles.

Cheers for the reply, it generally would be mine as well, but with a one year old in tow, who loves swimming and people, something like you describe would suit better (for the moment).
Both those areas you have mentioned look ideal, will take a closer look.

    There's Prestatyn as well.

Personally I would travel about a bit. A couple of nights in Anglesea, a couple in Bangor, a couple in Llandudno and a couple in Bets-y-Coed.
