What to do next?

I'm currently most of the way through my training contract with one of the big 4 in audit and I'm trying to decide what to do after my contract finishes.

One of the options I would be thinking about would be eventually open up my own practice. Would anyone have an experience or advice on how best how to do this? I'm asking purely as to what is the best way to achieve this from a career point of view. Obviously opening my own place is down the line so I'm just trying to find out what is the best move for me next to achieve this.

As I said before, I'm working in a big 4 in audit specifically in areas such as manufacturing and technology. I can't see myself staying here long term. One of the issues is that I while I don't hate auditing I don't want it to be 100% of my career. I'd like to more towards providing a full range of products such as finance etc.

I'm happy to do audits etc but I'd like other functions of my job too. I'd like to move into restructuring or an advisory role as well. I think the whole idea of formulating a financial plan/advice is what appeals to me as the like between this two areas.

Would I be best to move to a small or mid size practice to get the experience that they would provide or would I be best holding off until I get my auditing cert and seeing what is happening then?

    Thanks for your help
