The software that came with the camera is there a separate viewer to test it (instead of using skype), does it work in that?

Also would there be a switch on the camera itself?

What's the make/model of the camera?

    Hmm.

In Skype itself in the tools - options -general - video settings is there an option to select your camera from a dropdown?

Um, when you installed the camera did you have skype open at the same time?

Sorry for all the questions just need to pin point what's going on.

Did you try to close and exit skype completely (closing it from the tray too) and open it again?

A reboot might work too (you'd actually be surprised at the amount of times it fixes something!).
