Was driving Sunday. Car was driving perfectly had no signal that there was any problem. The car has started all the time first time. Anyways had driven about 20 miles or more entered onto a roundabout and the car died without warning. There was no chug or jerk just lost power right on the roundabout. Tried to restart with no luck. Luckily after about 5 mins 3 kind men pushed me off the roundabout.

The car still won't start. Got a mechanic out to hook up that computer thing and he said the ecu code showed up. Can the ecu just go without warning. He said it could also be the key. But unfortunely I only have one key! Aaaahhh!!

How can a car just die without warning shouldn't there have been some kind of warning that something was wrong. Apperntly it's at least 1500 to change the ecu. I seriously just can't afford that at all. Is selling the car as it is possible or is it worth scrapping now.

It's 02 Audi a4. Can ecu just die out of no where without any warning. Any help appreciated

I'd bring it to a good auto electrician, see what they say.

I'm so broke at the mo couldn't even afford to get it checked out for a while.

And yes I'm so angry with it I'd scrap it!!

It's diesel engine. Is that what your asking. The timing belt are find the engine does the trying to start sound but just can't. I was hoping it'd be something simple not looking like it is now though

The most common cause of these kind of problems on the B6 A4 is water getting somewher that it shouldn't. It would be a good idea to take the cover off the box that contains the engine ECU and check for water ingress. Where are you located?

My brother took it to a mechanic a friend of his and they took it apart and no water. The ecu seems to look fine. But he also thinks its an electrical fault. And Sunday was a lovely sunny day. Luckily for me I didn't break down in the rain. It was a nice day to wait around for people to help me. I'm in the west. It's so frustrating.
When I did pop the lid there was damp on the black cover of the engine though. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Like to drive perfectly, start first time every time and then with no warning to just die in the middle of a roundabout. It was so strange.

Had something similar on another car .... it was the Crankshaft positioner sensor ... not saying it will be this or whether your car even has one but same symptons as i had.

My car (same as yours only 2003) used to do the exact same thing, turned out there was a relay gone in it and some wires coroded 50 euro fix I think it was,

your best bet is to take it to a mechanic and have it looked at. It might not be as expensive as you think.

Thanks for the replies really hoping it is something else. The ecu at €1500 the cheapest just seems like a nightmare at this point. It's dead as a doornail at the min. I'd love if it was something simple. Two mechanics looked at it and seemed baffled.

Where in the west are you? My Focus died on me and I brought it to Charlie McEnery in Ennis, he worked at it for three days solid and fixed the fault (a few frayed, melted wires) and it only cost €150.
The first thing you need is a proper diagnosis, someone to tell you what the fault is for definite. It is hard to say without knowing for sure, it could be a million things ranging from less than a quid into the thousands.
Charlie should give you a detailed printout and explanation of what the fault-code is exactly for between €10 and €20.
Just saying it's the ECU something or other is far too vague to make any kind of decision.

Thanks everybody for her replies. Kinda making me calm down a little bit even though my gut says its something big.
Now the first mechanic with the little hook up computer did say it was the ecu code that came back but he also said it could be to do with the key that that sometimes happens, that the key gets faulty and the car thinks that somebody's trying to rob it and it won't start up. But no other keys. I think I'm just gonna get it towed somewhere and find out for sure. I knew I wasn't going to find the exact answer on here that would be impossible of course. But all yer input is really helpful.

The alarm and opening and locking still work. But might try the battery not sure its open the car but die in the middle of driving though, I would prefer u to be right it'd make life easier...

Ok so it's me again :-/

Car battery died from lack of use so I jump start it two days ago. Driving perfect until today when all of a sudden the car died couldn't even turn the steering wheel and it started working again seconds later but again within 15secs the car conked as I was turning the corner. It made a noise like it was trying to drive this time but I had to get somebody to jump start it again.

Somebody said that diesel cars dont really need a battery to keep driving that the battery shouldn't have died while driving. So are they right is it something other then the battery.

Old diesels didn't need any electrical power to stay running but modern diesel cars certainly do need electrical power to run.

So if a car battery was dodge it could cause the car to stop while driving?

That is quite possible. But if that happened then it would not crank either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 WhatsNext?

I know I left the car sitting for 3 weeks and the alarm went off cuz the battery was competly drained. Had to jump start then today car completely went dead as in the steering stopped and everythin then started again and then stopped. I tried to turn it back on it tried to start but couldn't. Then had to jump start it again. It just so strange

Car died while driving and would not crank, but ran OK for a while if you get a jump?
Sounds like dodgy battery/alternator to me.
