94 corolla whine from engine

I know this is vague and I will try to get a video up later.

Noise is there when the car is in gear and moving. It sounds like a belt or something like that and gets louder as the engine revs higher. It is still there with the clutch in but barely audible. Can only describe it as a whining whistling noise.
Do the belts connecting alternator and power steering pump turn faster with engine revs or are they constant speed? Same question for timing belt?
I fear it is the timing belt or something connected to it even though it was changed 10k miles ago.
Will be bringing it to my mechanic just wondering if anyone has had similiar issue.

Is it there when the car is not in gear or moving?

    When revving in neutral?

Yes all those belts go faster with increased engine rpm.

The aux belt on my 'rolla (93) squales like a whipped pig all the time but a few dabs of throttle stops it.

If its a whining whistling noise i doubt its a belt unless its a dodge pully or tensioner, but this would occur with the engine running, whether its in gear or moving or not makes no difference.

You mention with the clutch in it stops, is this when stationary or moving???

Hardly a clutch release bearing rattling??

    Thanks for the reply,

Just lifted bonnet when stationary and it is there but barely audible.
It's loudest when the car is moving when in gear.

If I put it in neutral when moving it dies down and becomes almost inaudible but when I rev it gets louder again whether in gear or in neutral. It is directly related to speed of engine revs whatever it is.
It does seem to come and go also. After a a short trip it goes but will be there next time I start it up.

Are you sure its loudest when the car's moving?

surely its the same when revving in neutral & stationary??

Is it a grinding noise, a squealing noise or ??

Yeah, my mistake it is there when I rev when stationary and in neutral also.
Thought it wasnt as it doesn't normally start until the car is moving but just left the engine idle for a min when stationary and it is there when I rev.
Definitely not a grinding noise and seems to be coming from the side of the engine where the belts are. Could it be the alternator? Sounds like its coming froma round that area?
Best described as a squeling noise.
Thanks for your help, have a very long journey to do at the weekend and don't want it to give up on me. Given that it seems to be intermittent should i bring to mechanic asap or see does it get worse?

Start the car, leave it running, if you're on a hard surface i.e. tarmac/concrete (not gravel) etc, turn the steering wheel, does the squeal get worse/start?

Id say it will, if it does, the belt (power steering & alterntator belt) is either loose or worn, i wouldnt really worry too much but wouldnt be any harm to get it changed at your nearest convenence, belt will cost you about a tenner and can be changed in about 15 minutes.

As for the long trip, id chance it, ive done about 10,000 miles with my belt squealing wildly :pac:

I have a spare one in the boot just too lazy to change it..

Try the steering thing anyway and report back.

If it is quieter when the clutch is engaged, then surely it is a gearbox related issue - bearings possibly? It is not exactly unheard of for the bearings in Toyota gearboxes to give up the ghost - and if it's not caught in time you risk breaking the entire gearbox (as I found to my cost).

I was thinking the same as above, but a release bearing etc generally would make a dull grinding noise more than a squeal i reckon, and in my experience would tend to get quieter as the car warms up.

Its a possibility as above but its easier to get rid of the simple possibilities first before questioning gearboxes etc..

OP sit in the car when it is ticking over, push in the clutch, note the noise, release the clutch : do you hear a slight grinding as you release the clutch/when it is fully released?

Sounds like the bearings in the gearbox to me, they do that on that model of Corolla..

    True, it happens,

But the OP mentioned the sound comes from the alternator PAS pump side, the gearbox is on the other side.. that is what's swaying me towards belts/pullies.

You never know, you could still be correct, hopefully not for the sake of the OP though :(

Take the fan belt off (its easy on those corollas) start the car and see if the noise is gone( you will get battery lights etc as the altenator wont be working) if the noise is gone check all pulleys for noise/roughness/play if none is found replace the belt/make sure its tensioned ok. If the noise doesnt stop record a video and post it here for us to hear.

    Any update Songok?

i have a 94 corolla xli. it could be a belt a bit loose, or as mine did, an alternator bearing just startin to go, not to worry, try as i did for altternator bearing and spray wd40 on pully shaft of alternator, that sorted mine for months, its still ok.

Never replied to this with update! :o

It was the alternator bearing causing it. I shoved a bit of lithium grease as far in as I could get it on the pulley shaft and it sorted it.
