thinking of getting these two products and setting them up over thunderbolt. i have western digital media players at all the tvs in the house. the house is wired in cat6 all round. and im using twonkey server to stream to them all. just wondering if anyone has set up a configuration with these for a similar purpose.

    this is the nas drive

an them just the basic mac mini.

they will be connected through the thunderbolt connection.

i have build many a home server but this seems very good in my opinion using the thunderbolt and there is some nice apps for mac for downloading and filing my media automatically

any opinions or tip please let me know

You must have lots more money than sense, you can do things much cheaper, a 3TB drive is ~€160. Here are some options:

    Synology

    Qnap

Thunderbold, is not needed. Standard Ethernet (100mbit) is plenty for streaming full HD, the highest HD bitrate available top out at about 27-35Mbit so Gigabit (1000mbit) provides plenty of futureproofing. The speed of the drives themselves would be the bottleneck but this is plenty fast enough for full HD.

I'm using a QNAP TS-419 and have had great experiences with it so far. Everything is wired over ethernet. I've got Plex installed in my Mac Mini and use tools like Hazel and Automatic to manage my torrent RSS feeds and autodownload and sort my TV shows amd movies.

The QNAP NAS is fine. It cost me about €500 I think at the time last year and I installed 4 x 3TB drives at the time so the whole solution came in at just over €1000 if I remember correctly. The Transmission client built into the NAS is great for getting the downloading done. I've never had any issues with playback of 1080p content even when streaming more 1080p content to other devices simultaneously. The QNAP also has a neat package management function called QPKG which allows you to expand the NAS to provide media servers and various other types of useful things. Recently a version of Plex server has been released for the atom processor running on the 419 but I don't think it's in QPKG just yet. If you really want to spend a bit extra, go for the QNAP x59 series which have an Intel Celeron processor installed. You have a slightly better range of available software available for installation, like the x86 version of Plex Media Server. In practice though I've got Plex MS running on my mac Mini and there's never been an issue really. For a good highish end setup it's pretty OK if I do say so myself.
