Can anyone inform me on what the course is like? What you learn, hours, difficulty? I'm thinking about putting Psychology as my 1st choice but I need more info. on the course to be certain. I want to go straight into Psychology and not the arts route, so if I get the points and the course am I then in the denominated Psychology, and not Psych studies? Also is there an optional year abroad? I saw on qualifax that it was a 3 year course?

If you put down straight psych then you'll do 4 subjects in the first year but after that you'll do just psychology.

There is an optional year abroad in third year.

Yeah I did a bit more research after I posted.. So if I put down the Psych course that's 525 points I still have to do the same as 1st year Arts? Do I then get to bring on a second subject in 2nd year or just psychology?

Yip if you get into the denominated psych you'll only do psych classes in year 2 &3 .

    Here's a couple of links.

Thanks for that! Just wondering if you do Psychology yourself, and if so, how do you find it?

Yeah I'm heading into third year Psych Studies. I love it. Theres a few modules that are particularly 'sciencey' that I'm just not that into but otherwise I really like it.

Some of the lecturers are great but some are awful. Par example I emailed one lecturer in April then when she didn't get back to me I emailed another who emailed her.. Still no reply.. :/

But on the other hand I've had lecturer go above and beyond to help me out :)

Sounds good! Since you're not in the denominated Psychology(is that right?!) do you have to do another year after or how does it work? Apparently Psych studies is different to denominated, is that right, do you know?

Also do you pick certain modules to focus on or do you just do all of them?

Yes, Psych Studies is different. You take it plus another subject for your degree. Psych Studies is roughly half of the content of the denominated programme (obviously, as your other subject would be in place of the other half), so it isn't accredited by the PSI in its own right. To gain the equivalent of a denominated Psychology degree that is accredited by the PSI, you'll need to do a conversion course, where you do the modules you didn't do in Psych Studies.

There's a 1 year H. Dip Conversion course in NUIG, which is specifically for those who do Psych Studies. There are 2 year H. Dips in UCC, UCD and Trinity (I think) which would also include some of the content you'll have already done in the Psych Studies programme as well as the bits you'll have missed. These are all very competitive, and you'll need to have a fairly high 2.1 or above to have a good chance of being accepted. (mind you, that might be changing a bit due to postgrad grant cuts)

In each year there'll be core modules that everyone does, and you'll also have a choice of some electives. Some of the electives are very new, and might change from year to year.

Thanks for that :) One more question(I'm sure;)), what are your exams and assignments like? I'd like to know what you actually do in College exams - is it like writing an essay, or..? :)
