    hi,
i was about to renew my sub to mcafee for my pc when it was suggested to me that the windows security essentials and windows defender would do the same job for free.
so trying this, i downloaded security essentials and its working fine, and the firewall is up also.
but when i tried to start defender, which is already on the machine (windows 7 pro 64 bit), it wouldn't start. so i went to the website for defender to download it again or repair it through the website, but no option to repair is given, and the download worked but would not install as i already have a version on the pc. any ideas on this?
and am i right to even try this? i've just always had mcafee, and presumed you needed a specialist virus software??

    thanks

    Ed

Have you uninstalled Mcafee yet? If not uninstall it and then go to the McAfee site and download the removal tool and run it also. Link for removal tool

You can't run the two of them at the same time, it can cause a lot of problems, so to prevent this your computer won't let it happen.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a more complete package than Windows Defender, although neither are as good as some of the better paid products.

Microsoft SE is considerably more secure than McAfee but Comodo, Kaspersky and Norton Internet Security are better again.
