I'm looking to get a thunderbolt external hard drive for my mac but so far i can only see this http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10549 I thought LaCie were one of the only manufacturers doing bus thunderbolt drives but i cant find anyone else. Thoughts? I would get a time capsule but even they dont have thunderbolt, whats with that?

From what I've seen, there are not a lot of thunderbolt products on the market at the moment. I could be wrong though. Most manufactures of Ex-HDD's seem to be using USB 3.0 now.

Maybe Thunderbolt is a bit to far ahead of its time? I'm sure you will see a few more products come out soon. I've only see that the Mac Display uses Thunderbolt to connect to a Mac.

It might be to costly as well to produce an Ex-HDD with Thunderbolt connection. Windows users will miss out on it so it could lose manufactures money in making a connection that only an apple user can take advantage of, where as a USB connection is beneficial to both an Apple and Windows user.. Win win with USB for the manufacture!

Here's a search for thunderbolt devices, courtesy of the apple store: here

I'm sure more TB HDD's will pop up in the next months. As apple are shifting towards non-user upgradeable laptops (the retina MBP), the focus for fast external storage for professionals will sharpen.

What is the point of thunderbolt drives when the actual drive itself can't come anywhere close to thunderbolt speeds ?

True, thunderbolt HDD's may seem pointless when it's using a single HDD where the R/W speeds normally max out at around 80/90MB/s. It would be best to hook up multiple HDD's in RAID 0, but even then, the average speeds would be around 120MBs.

As SSD's get cheaper now, they will be incorporated into the drives and we could get some faster speeds, but as it stands thunderbolt is a bit ahead of it's time in terms of the speeds it can handle.

Alot of thunderbolt drives are indeed multiple drives. I've tested a couple, The WD 4TB gets 220-230MB/sec so def worth using thunderbolt for large transfers.

Not many manufacturers have TB yet, but it has just been released to them from the exclusivity agreement. So far, WD, Freecom and Lacie.
