I did my open water last year. Am gonna meet my brother in Thailand this year and hope to get some diving in. What is the easiest way for him to get diving quickly... Is it worth him doing an introduction to diving course, will we be able to do some proper dives?

    Where is he now?
Best bet would be for him to try to get qualified before you meet up.
Otherwise he'll be doing a Discover Scuba, and you may possibly be allowed to tag along, but more likely not.

Thanks. He's in Ireland at the moment & I fear it will be a bit pricey for him to do it before he leaves... I'll start looking at courses in both Ireland and Thailand....

he's looking at €350ish to get OW certified if he wants to go down with you and instructor, he could try do it over there but getting qualification here will mean he has a head start on perfecting his buoyancy before he gets over to Thailand.

Will you be Diving around Koh Tao ?

We'll probably end up in Koh Tao. I think we'll just take it as it comes... If he wants to dive, he can get a course there fairly cheap. We don't want to commit to anything....

If you are asking if he can dive without doing the course well then the answer is an emphatic No.
Another poster suggested getting his OW before he goes. If this is indeed available for 350 then that it really good value. PADI take a good chunk money for every cert so it is not necessarily going to be that much cheaper in Thailand.

Also I would be of the opinion that if he is going to keep diving in future doing the course in Irish water will teach you more than doing the course in warmer waters. (I have done course in both)

I did my PADI open water a couple of weeks ago in koh panang cost me around 250 so 100 in the difference it seems!
