    Hey, I got an email from the English department today congratulating me for completing first year. I'm not taking English in second year as I'll be doing pure music, but does receiving this email mean I've passed first year English?

    No, it just means you've finished the year, I'd imagine.

    Those emails are sent out automatically, usually followed be a reading list for the next academic year, so I don't think it's a reflection of your results.
