There must be a lot of threads on petrol v diesel on here but I am looking for some advise. I know that diesel only really starts to pay off over mileage of 10,000 a year. I would do roughly 10,000, which isn't very much for a diesel, but most of My driving is on the m50 and its a 25 minute journey to work, again, not the longest journey.
If I have to get another petrol, I don't think I could afford an engine over a 1.6 where petrol prices come into play.

I do a trip through town once or twice a week, and I heard short journeys cause problems with diesel dpf's.

I am looking for a comfortable car, probably a saloon. Cars I am interested in.

    BMW 3 series, diesel only
    Jaguar x type, diesel only
    Volvo s40, 1.6 petrol or 1.8,2.0 diesel

The Volvo S40 doesn't come in a 1.6 petrol, just 1.8 and up. Also, the diesel is either a 1.6 or 2 litre, no 1.8 diesel in them.
3 Series is best of that bunch, but priciest also. What's the budget?

Car zone have quite a lot of Volvo s40's with 1.6 l petrol engines. That's just where I saw them

Sorry my mistake on the 1.8 diesel though.

Budget would be around 8-9k at a stretch

That was my concern. I don't think It's too powerful. My biggest issue is there is a lack of comfortable saloon petrol cars. But I suppose I would have to stretch to a 1.8 in that case

Make sure to include depreciation in your calculations, as sometimes it is cheaper to go diesel even if you drive 3000km per annum.
