Motor Tax Refund Query

    Hi Forum,

I did use the search function but to no avail to my specific question.

Long story short, I wrote off my car, rear ended the hitch of a lorry, no damages on his end, no injuries, but my car was in bits.

Didn't bother claiming as it was no point considering the value of my car vs the claim payout less the excess and effect on my NCB.

I bought a new car and I was lucky to sell my old car to a neighbour who is the owner of a large mecahics in my home town, he gave me €350 for the car, I was delighted, I just wanted the car gone. I would have taken a free service on my new car if he offered!

Now to my question! He's going to be using the car for spare parts as the need come along, my old car will be sitting in his yard being stipped apart as the need arises. e.g he's already removed the Ignition and ECU, and sold those parts.

Can I claim back the motor tax for this, I paid a years tax only 2 months ago in April. I checked out the Tax Website, and downloaded the form, I've it ready to bring to the garda station for their signiture, I removed the tax disc before the garage took the car off me and I still have the VRC/Log Book/what ever you call it, ownership cert?! The car has been sold for breaking. Theirs no hope of it going back on the road again. The car however is not "Completly Destroyed" yet!

Do I need a End of Life cert? Or would a letter from the garage saying it's sold for scrap do?
Can any garage do one of these certs for me, or does it have to be a proper scrapping facility that provides these certs?
Can my mechanic prepare one of these certs for me now on the basis of the car will eventually be completly destroyed once he's done with it? Or do I have to wait?

Thanks a mill lads and ladies!
