Fillings between teeth

    Hey folks, I asked a similar question on here before but the thread got a little derailed.

    The dentist says I need four fillings for cavities that I've developed on the sides in between teeth near the gumline that they just spotted on x-ray. She recommended going in from the top of the tooth and drilling down the side then filling the whole thing up.

    Is this the standard approach for that kind of cavity? The nurse mentioned something about trying to get in from the side since the cavities were so small but they decided against it.

    I've never had any fillings before and I'm a twice-yearly boyscout style dentist-goer so I'm not sure any of it works, just looking for a bit of info before making another appointment! Thanks!

    Yes,that mode of access would be standard.
    (we once had a situation where a nurse was asked for a small polishing strip,she proclaimed in shock "A small one?! Really? Are you sure?".....er yeah,y'know,it's like,a smaller version of the regular one?! However, to a patient, you can imagine what it sounded like)
    The 4 cavities could not have been visible at checkups if they are between the teeth...this is why xrays are taken.
    The only way of preventing a recurrence is daily flossing,& xrays at certain checkup intervals.

    Sound perfectly normal OP, these dame cavities between the teeth are common but usually involve drilling from the biting surface to get to them, they spread like wildfire if left untreated.

    Cheers for the replies! Spoke to the dentist on the phone this morning for a bit of peace of mind.

    As a quick follow-up, I was also worried about the cost so she said I had roughly a six month window to get them all done and could space them out across that time period. Does that also sound reasonable in people's experience? I'm thinking of getting them done after the next paycheque at the end of July, pay for two and put the other two on the credit card, but it might be cheaper to leave the other two until September when I'll get another big paycheque in the door. Does that 6 month period sound okay to you guys?
