    Eurosport!

You may have your box saorview box connected to the TV but you have a UPC cable connected to the TV! LOL.

    You are not watching Saorview.

    I wish I had UPC!
Have a sky box but it hasnt been used since we were disconnected 3 years ago!
Still dont understand it, there seems to be a bit of a lag every now and again but other than that still cant understand how theyre coming in on the saorview!

    Its BBC UK

What have you got connected to the box and how?

What frequencies are they on ? Eurosport for example. Press the info button on the saorview receiver remote.

Will definately doublecheck that box tomorrow!

I would like to know too as the current problem for me as I seemingly cannot get the UK channels on my Saorview Box.

Although I bought it in Tesco, not Argos.

The uk channels are not being broadcasted via saorview.
Maybe the OP connected his box to a forgotten exchorus mmds aerial.

You will only get UK channels on a Saorview box if you're able to receive a signal from a terrestrial transmitter in the UK. Doesn't matter where you buy the box.

That wouldn't work with the box, it would have to be connected to the tv, as already mentioned by STB. That's if it even is a Saorview box he has.

@ youngblood, what do you mean by "disconnected" from Sky? If the dish & cables are still there, you can use your box for the free channels (BBCs, ITVs etc.) or is it some kind of apartment setup?

Eurosport is not on UK Freeview so the OP is either having us on, or confused.

The digital part of exchorus mmds is working with dvb-t and UPC didn't change that.
The last time I checked mmds 8 or 9 digital channels weren't scrambled.

The OP has over 500 posts in boards.ie so less likely to be one of those 'having us on' posters (obvious ones in the past would have small post counts).

I think (I could be wrong) I read that the cable TV in Longford (a locally owned service, not upc) will work with FTA DVB-T boxes for its basic digital service ?

Is that where the OP is ???

    Was working shifts there-Update

My fluke run of stations is over!
Partner turned on Saorview box, a message came up
saying something along the lines of "press ok to remove channels not found on your saorview" or something along those lines and hey presto, no BBC/ITV or Sports

To answer the above question re Eurosport, it def seemed to be that station, however I didnt stay watchin it long enough so it have just been a eurosports clip been shown on some other channel, the screen info did say eurosports, so still cant work that now

So as of 5pm this evening, Im now back to flicking through the regular 8/9 crappy saorview ones!

The Sky box is still plugged in and we do get the recession stations (ie dont pay subscription), so maybe thats what was trying to come through

Is there anyway to tune in the free recession stations from the skybox through saorview??

    Cheers folks

What's the make & model of this "Saorview" box & what kind of aerial is connected to it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,776 ✭✭✭youngblood

Its an akura saorview, lots of cables but we have it connected to analogue ie aerial and through the sky box with satellite, or at least theres a cable coming from satellite, to be honest we just fiddled round with the existing cables until we got signal
We havent a notion of what cable goes where, was really pot luck!

Well you definitely did not get BBC channels through your Saorview box, unless it was picking up a signal from NI or the UK. And even if you were picking it up, Eurosport isn't on Freeview UK afaik.

    There's another explanation to this.

I may or may not have the answer to this. There are several pirate stations operating in Cork and in one or two other places broadcasting on digital. They seem to broadcast Mass from local churches mostly but they have put on other feeds at times. This might include The BBC's and eurosport.

That doesn't narrow it down. What regional news (at 6:30 pm for example) is it broadcasting?

If you want to find out what was happening with these channels, find out exactly what is feeding the box & any other boxes & how they're connected to the tv or each other. A more precise location (town) might be useful too.

And maybe a bit less of the "recession" stuff, some people don't find that funny at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,685 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I only get the 'recession' stations too.

    But its through choice.

I had $ky TV since it started in the late 80s, and dumped it about 18 months ago, got fed up paying for crap. I could well afford to have $ky, won't ever have it again.

What part of the country are you in?

I would recommend resetting your boxes.. This would allow access to the extra stations. Apparently they have updated the saorview signal/software??

Live in cavan and have reset it twice... have my aerial plugged into it and had bbc before i put it in new topset

The analogue UK channels will still be there on your tv, you'll need to connect a cable between the Saorview box RF-out socket & the tv's aerial socket.

The power of the Freeview (UK terrestrial) channels will increase in October, when the analogue signal is switched off & you might get reliable reception then. The UK channels are on a completely separate system, nothing to do with Saorview.

Would it be the aerial picking up a leaky UPC cable in the area by any chance?

Can pick up sky sports audio with a scanner around limerick at around 400mHz...

No problems receiving NI terrestrial in Cavan, most likely from Brougher mountain.

Hi folks, new to this thread.....

Does anyone now if there are plans to standardise all Saorview boxes & set-ups that when you buy a Saorview box that the UK freeview channels are included.?

Would like to have one box does all.

If you had read around the forum, you would see that any Saorview box will receive regular Freeview, if you are in an area where Freeview is available.

Thanks, I'm in the mid-west...just need a simple 'out of the box' system that I can set up on my home TV with standard aerial that will give me the Saorview channels and freeview BBC/ITVs if possible.

If you currently get Uk channels using your aerial directly from the North a FreeView HD box might give you both options. However I doubt you would get reliable aerial reception in "mid-west" from NI. Satellite would be the more reliable option for UK TV

    Yes, was thinking the same.
Eventually over time I image digital / freeview all channels will be on one box using standard aerial.

Highly, highly unlikely. I know you should never say never, but this is one instance where I'd consider making an exception.

Well apparently there is a box that will receive saorview and the english channels BBC, ITV Channel 4 etc,

    https://www.mytv.ie/pages/orderMainRoom.jsf

Although forums here suggest that the box they offer is not on the saorview approved list
They do say that this one box will provide access to saorview and terrestrial channels,
You will need a dish of some sort thou I imagine

    So there ya go

Thats a combo box ( 2 prices given depending on whether you go saorview approved or not ), requiring both an aerial and a dish. The topic here is Freeview / saorview - i.e no dish.

No box can get a signal where none exists. This changover is largely a change in transmission modulation, if you have been getting a NI/Welsh analogue signal then you'll almost certainly get a digital signal. If you haven't been getting a NI/Welsh analogue signal then you probably won't, except at the margin.

Fortunately nowadays there is no need for enormous aerials, if you are beyond reasonable range, as a dish will pick up Freesat.
