Are you using the asus os , kinda like a load of square tiles ?
If you are asaik it under system and the add and remove programs. (to remove the learn chinese)
    Screen shot would be usefull.

I had that firefox problem for a while as well using anything that wasent internet explorer , It evently sorted itself out.
I am using firefox 13 atm and was on the site today. Seams to be working

tbh you should consider putting on Ubuntu linux on instead of the asus linux (which i presume is installed). I had it on my asus eee pc 900 and had no problems . The asus os is too restricted

2 gb of ram probable wont make you netbook run that faster

thanks, ye am running stuff that came on netbook.
how would i change the os to ubuntu?

the add remove software is clunky and only shows me updates.

i have no idea how to take a screen shot
    (shame on me)

would like to install latest firefox too.

i rebooted by press f9 repeatedly when i turn netbook on, is it then i try and install ubuntu?

would happily wipe all the asus stuff and just have a os for web surfing.

    thanks for reply bpb101

To be honest you'd probably be better off running Xubuntu on a netbook, as Unity plays havoc on them in my experience - it's a bit wasteful with screenspace and could run a bit sluggish.

Having said that if you wouldn't be comfortable putting a new OS on, or don't know anybody who would do it for you, then just do your best to clear it up using the Asus OS.

If you want to remove an application completely and be sure it's gone, you can use the terminal. For example, if you want to remove an application called 'learn-chinese', you could type in either of the following:

    sudo apt-get remove learn-chinese

    or

    sudo apt-get purge learn-chinese

'sudo' gives you administrator privileges, so make sure you type in the application correctly as you don't want to accidentally delete a massive part of your filesystem.

To update firefox, if you can't do it from Asus add/remove software, you can again run from the terminal the following commands:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install firefox

That should install the latest version of firefox available to your OS.

if you only want to browse the net fast and safely, Id recommend you replace the whole operating system with something like jolicloud OS

    To get ubuntu or xubuntu
go to a windows pc if avaible as it would be easyer for you and get usb pendrive linux

install it and download ubuntu xubuntu(i would go ubuntu )
load up the usb pendrive linux and let it make an (x)ubuntu creator

simple hit the boot option (you said it was f9 or something ) and follow the onscreen question and instructions . when you come to partitioning replace and earse everything.

and then watch a lovely slideshow for about 20 minutes and boom new os .

All your files will be destroyed , no mercy will be shown

Thanks, will do as you say and use USB stick on windows laptop to download new os, then try the new reboot. Nothing needed on netbook of any importance.
How do I let it make a Ubuntu creator?

Well Xubuntu is essentially ubuntu with a lightweight window manager and has more lightweight alternatives to the stock ubuntu software (libreoffice etc). I haven't used the eeepc 901 but from my experience of installing ubuntu based distros on netbooks, unity can cause performance problems. Try ubuntu first though if you'd prefer an OS with more user-friendly features and effects etc.

I haven't used usb pendrive linux before, but it seems to enable you to make a live usb - meaning that you can test out an operating system by running it from a usb stick first before actually installing it to your hard disk and wiping your current OS.

You can also use Unetbootin to do this - it will download your linux distribution of choice and install it directly to a usb drive that you specify. There's a tutorial here you can have a read over: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-linux-with-ease-using-unetbootin/
