I was wonder if anyone could help me,
I really want to do sport science in DCU. but don't know if i'll get, it is it worth my while putting down common entry to science aswell? Im interested in sport science but would I have the same interest in common science, like are the modules similar? and would it set me in the right direction career wise to do something in sport?
    thanks :)

Hi, umfortunately I do not think it would be worth your while. CES leading into either Biotech, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and one of the physics modules is more based around leading to a career in industry or research in, for example, making drugs. There is little to nothing based around sports science. If you go to the DCU pages of both courses and compare modules you will get an idea of what I mean.

If you feel you will not get the course, you should look into putting down a level 7 or fetac course that leads into the DCU sports Science degree. Hope this helps.

Thats actually great help thanks, ye looking at the modules they are completely different. I'd much rather the sport science.
I think its too late to apply for any fetac courses :(. So fingers crossed!!

Are there no level 7's you can put down even? I thought the CAO closed first of July

It is probably too late at this stage, but if anyone else is interested: I completed one year of Common Entry Science in DCU then transferred into Sports Science to first year. Its not an official route so they don't advertise it, but it is possible. That being said - in my year there were 3 of us trying to transfer and I was the only one successful!

I've just completed common entry science Im looking to transfer in pe and biology now instead! Is there any advice you could give me to increase my chance of a place. What was your cover letter like? Or why did they accept you and not the others? Anything will help, Thanks! :)

Make sure you understand the course your going into and how it differs in content from what you studied in CES. Talk to guys in PEB they'll tell you what to write about it. Dont say that you didnt like CES - after all your going into a course where your learning to teach science. Say something like whilst you enjoyed CES... your passion is in teaching and you have a particular interest in improving the health of the nation via increasing the population's physical literacy. This combined with a focus on Bio your major science interest ....ect. Basically just tell them what they want to hear! Also if you can show you have gained experience of PE somehow (shadowing) that would be to your advantage.

    I hope this helps

    All the best

Hi OP, Sport Science Student here myself. A few things I would note before committing 100% to the course... 1. First semester will be a major shock if you haven't done physics or chemistry (neither of which I did in LC) 2. The course itself is extremely extremely and only touches the basics of some concepts and details others in great detail, and chances are you will need to do a postgrad or some alternative form to specialise in whatever you find suits you 3. A background in sport is helpful but not essential, for example I played soccer and now coach at a UEFA level with teams and the like, which helped me decipher some of the more artsy-modules like psychology to knowledge that I can apply to my own sport path and interest, as opposed to being taught the basics of psychology but having no way to apply it. 4. You will have a blast, the lecturers (for the most part) are superb, highly motivated and passionate about what they do, and plus you get to wear comfy tracksuits everyday and not give a f**k. Best of luck!

Are there any good backdoor courses to get into sports science in UCD or DCU other than CES (which seems a bit dodgy!)?
