I am buying a Defy 1 this week to hit the road once more after 20years. Having done much research over this past month or so I think this bike is a good choice.I know it will cost €1200 but it should last me for a while.

Appreciate any advise on my forthcoming purchase.:)

    • Take it easy to begin with - start off slowly and build up!
    • Try to get into the habit of high cadence - aim for 80-90 on any sort of incline.(you should buy a bike computer that counts/shows cadence/pedal rpm)
    • Get some Lidl/Aldi bike kit, cheap but perfect to start off (buy smaller size than you think you need)
    • Dont forget to ensure you bring plenty to drink on spins - and food if you are doing above about 40km
Ask loads of questions on here !
(and be prepared to NEED to upgrade in a year or two)

I'm back on the bike about 2 years now and by far the best thing I have done
But a few things to keep in mind depending on age you will not fly up the hills infect its a pain watching people passing you out and does nothing for the ego after 2 years my body has changed no end legs like tree trunks I have climbed up mt Leinster 2 weeks ago (To the mast) and last week did the w100 in 3h 42mins so all I can say is get up and take the pain every chance you get cold, rain feck it just do it and you will be a new man in no time remember the hills dont get any easier you just get quicker :D by the way great bike I have a defy carbon now and love it 1 last thing cut up the credit card the bike will turn into a money pit best of luck and keep us informed:D

I think this says it all... it's a bike I'd love to own.

Well lads I finally took a leap of faith and purchased a Defy 1 and my goodness am I glad I did. THis is a very responsive bike with a great range of gears to suit all elevations. I started off slowly today completing 44km in 1:51 giving me an avg speed of 23.6. Elevation gain was 367m.It must be said I really enjoyed the run out and am looking forward to next weeks spin. My only complaint is the saddle as I had a very sore arse when I got home but no other complaints.

How does this run compare to other first timers out there ?
