Suspension would be worth going over very thoroughly, engine wise etc nothing to worry about.

History is everything with one of these. There are a number of potentially very large repair bills with them:

    Turbo
    Auto gearbox
    Transfer box

And a few smaller but still expensive items:

Electric fuel pump under the car and also the one in the tank
    Rear subframe bushes

There are other common issues with them as well such as front suspension bushes, CV joint boots etc but none of these are particularly expensive to sort out.

The ideal situation is to buy a car with some/all of the major work already done. If you can manage that you should be ok. But if you buy the wrong one it could bankrupt you.

thats great, thanks for your advise, just what im looking for. as far as i know the particular one in going to look at has only recently passed the NCT which i think can only be a good thing as i think they are pretty thorough when checking bushes, cv joints etc etc.

They are a nice machine but I'm not a fan of these engines with high miles. Their inlet manifolds just gunk up.

I've been kinda half looking/waiting for one of these to start getting cheap enough to enter my miserable budget. Its everything I usually hate in a car yet for some reason I like early versions of X5s.

Good luck car hunting and some pics please if you do buy ;)

I'm the same. I usually don't like SUVs but I love the X5s.
