I have been after a new lens lately.

I got a 24mm 2.8 on ebay, but I am returning it due to a quailtiy issue.

    I am now back looking.

I would like your opinion on these lens.

    canon 24mm 2.8
    canon 28mm 2.8
    canon 35mm f2

    Compared to

    Tamron 17-50 2.8

For not much more I am getting the speed of the canon primes and the added benefit of the focal lengths with the tamron.

I have a budgit of 200 . I would not consider L glass as I have a family to feed. And motor noise does not bother me in the slightest.

I am swaying between the 35mm prime and the tamron..

    whats do you guys think?

primes almost always out perform zooms optically, glass is better, less, glass, less distortion, less problems with quality with primes, you can take a step forward or back with a prime, you cant fix poor glass on the zoom.

yes. I was thinking this myself.

I was also thinking. The primes I quoted are late 90s in design.

But the Tamron is very high tech in comparison with Vibration control Or IS in canon terms. Surely optics have come on a bit(even in the economy class)

Does these bells and whistles beat the basic quality optics of an old design canon lens.

I do love the size of the 35mm . Its a great lens to bring anywhere. Even wide open it is sharp.

I am chasing the impossible question. A lens you can use for everyday use.

i doubt age has much to do with it; the maths of optics hasn't changed.
i use a lens from the 70s which is so sharp you'd cut yourself on it.
to be fair, it's from a hasselblad.
