I was wondering if anyone knew how this works in Ireland.

I need to have a back OP to take out a disc.
I have been informed from the Surgeon i will need 3-6 weeks off work and i wont be able to drive for 2 weeks after the OP

When i tell work i need this time off they wont be too happy but its on Medical advice.

I understand i wont be paid when i take this time off to recover but i think i read somewere that i can claim the Social Welfare for the weeks im out of work without pay.

If there is anyone who has had to take time off work and knows how this works id appreciate a response.

    Thanks a lot.

    Steve

    Hi Steve,
    You should apply for:

"Illness Benefit within 7 days of becoming ill. A delay of more than 7 days may cause you to lose some of your payment. If there is a good reason for a delay in applying, your payment may be backdated.
You can get an application form for Illness Benefit from your family doctor (GP) or hospital doctor. The reason you can only get this form from a doctor is because a doctor must fill in part of the form. It is not available online.
You must send in a medical certificate (known as MC 2) each week for as long as you are ill, unless you are told otherwise.
You must get a final medical certificate from your doctor before you go back to work."

Check out citizensinformation.ie and do ask for either a monthly cert OR a bi weekly cert, as you have to send it in weekly as it stands and you may not be able to go to your doctors for a couple of weeks.

Don't be pressured into returning to work, it is of the utmost importance that you allow your back time to heal.

ALso, if you pay rent you may be entitled to rent allowance for the duration of your absence - I did this and was accomadtated straight away.

    Best of luck

    Thanks a lot Dalton,

That inforation you sent on will be of great benefit, we have a new born baby a week now so my Wife is on Maternity and now i will be going on sick leave or to recover from my Op...

I find stuff like this very hard to presue and get the correct answers when i go ringing up citizens info etc....but with your info at least i have a start.

Steve illness benefit is not means tested so they don't take other earnings into account. Check out the site for more information.
