Anyone else notice that the fan on their Mac will sometimes start and will not stop even though there's nothing like video running.....and the only way to shut it off is to restart ?
It really bugs me as the machine is normally so quiet.
    It's a Macbook Air < 1 year old.

Generally if the fans are running fast it means the laptop is trying to cool after a CPU intensive task, even a hidden background task. Try open activity monitor when the fans are running hard and sort the running tasks by their "% CPU". The higher the percentage, the more demand the process is using.

But if you want you could manually control the fans using an application like "smcFanControl". But I'd rather find the process that's demanding the CPU and causing the fans to run hard and kill it, than forcing the fans to run slower and risk heat damage to the laptop.

I am a relative noob to mac so I was going to ask was there an equivalent of task manager. Where is activity monitor?

Activity monitor is pretty much the Mac's task manager. Go to you applications folder>Utilities>Activity Monitor.

Ive had the exact same problem on my macbook pro for the last couple of weeks.....turns out it was firefox....using 90% cpu or something ridiculous like that. I switched to chrome completely now and its been running at normal temps again, and much faster also :)

Yup, it's a mac task manager equivalent. Here's a tip also, press CMD + spacebar to bring up a spotlight search in the top right corner, then just type the name of a file/ app/ anything you're looking for, and it'll pop up the results, by far the handiest thing on a mac for me.

Also, I could be a simple flash video/ website, that's hogging up all the CPU power. Mac's are know to always run hot and loud when running flash.
