You'd primarily use iTunes to synch your ipod with your pc/laptop. You just load up the program, plug in your ipod and it'll find it.

To upload music just drag and drop the files to the device, no need to pay. You can rip cd's you own or buy tracks in itunes itself.

Just a reminder folks no talk of downloading illegal music.
You can sync MP3 files you own I'm sure by adding them to iTunes library/sync to iPod.
