concept to exhibition workshop, call for participants

Hi all. So the printing workshops have been running for a year now () and feedback has consistently asked for more thorough sessions. I don't consider myself to be a high level PS wiz though, and I've been trying to come up with a proposal I think I'm experienced and qualified to facilitate.

Some recent events have put the idea into my head of running a course that takes participants through the processes of putting a body of work together. It would encompass working on concept framework; teasing out all the variables of a proposal of work, capturing the images, editing (both in a Photoshop sense and a what-i-should-include-and-in-what-order way), printing and presentation (appropriate size, framing etc. options...), and if there was enough interest, an exhibition of work.

As a starting point, I'm not sure what form *exactly* this would take, what people want and need in that regard etc. I'm also seeing it as something of a collaborative, peer to peer experience where the group would bounce of each other (figuratively ;) ) moreso than the printing workshop model of me delivering training. So i'm proposing a guinea-pig, not-for-profit experiment: 5 to 8 participants at first, run only at cost. I can try to source a venue, but any help in this regard is appreciated.

So if you'd like to get involved, take your images beyond the singular and see where this goes, PM me. There is NO prior experience necessary, and NO MINIMUM LIMIT of expertise! So please don't feel you're "not good enough". It's just for fun :) Any questions, shout below...

(PS: mod approval sought and granted :) )

Would colour control (input [scanner/camera], monitors and printing) be something you'd be looking at?

Hi heebie. If people want it, yes, but it's something i cover comprehensively in the print workshop. I guess i'd like to see participants who'll gain from the whole experience, so there'd be an expectation of attendance for all the sessions. That make sense?

i must say i'd be interested in the workshop, but wouldn't say what heebie suggests would be a natural fit; my interest would largely be from a 'make me get up off my fat ass and do something' perspective, though.

i think including all the techy stuff, would just make this too long winded

i think doing the conceptual stuff and practicalities of doing the exhibition makes sense

in fact institute of photography run a course like this, if i remember rightly its 12 weeks long or so

having printed and been involved in over 200 exhibitions now, from small 10 piece to ones over 100 pieces in some of irelands most prestigious museums, there is waaaaay more to it than meets the eye

Yup, i'd be more interested in the conceptual/inspiratiional end of it. That's not to say technicalities can't be touched on though. For example, getting a consistent look to your prints, colours etc is vital to a body of work coming together.

What i personally want to get from this is what people want from it, so i'm open to suggestion from participants. If it's doable in the time frame and enough people want it, i'll cover it. That's the experimental bit :)

Heebie, Magic, if you want in gimme a shout :) three places gone..

I don't know why, but I could be interested.

i'm going to go very meta and pick and exhibit a project documenting photographers doing workshops on picking projects and exhibiting them.

Not sure where yet. I'd be hoping for somewhere central, but it'd depend a lot on what people wanted to do and what resources were needed. I know small groups meet in the central hotel library bar, good quiet spot with free wifi. We could reserve a few tables in the back room i'm sure.. if anyone has a better idea/board room going free i'm open to suggestions :)

There's also the likes of Exchange, libraries, plenty of options with a bit of planning...

Update: 5 spaces gone so we are a go:) If anyone's still interested though we can squeeze in a few more I think. I also have a provisional yes on a city centre venue, possibly Thursdays after work, if that helps anyone decide.

    Yay! :)

Having had the pleasure of being half of a joint exhibition with Sineadw, I can heartily recommend her as a source of guidance, cajoling, intelligent questioning, silly questioning (equally important), practical advice, guidance, inspiration and all round kicking in the arse until you get sorted and have pictures on the wall for people to look at.
