Thats alarmingly big. I'm on OSX Lion, so I think it might have something to do with versions. I have an iPhone so that may be included in there.

I have time machine but I haven't backed it up in yonks. What do I do? My mac is running rather slugishly.

seems strange you are backing up your disk to your disk.

If you open up Time Machie preferences, you can select what disk to back up to

This could be your external HDD or a NAS drive

Check to see what Time machie is backing you up to and change it

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

I just turned it off. Looked there now and there is nothing it is backing up to. But, the space still remains.

If your on Lion it might be local backups causing you the issue.

You can turn this off in terminal.

    Hope that helps.

Turning off whatever filled up the backup files/folders will not reclaim the space already occupied. To do that you will need to Trash whatever the files & folders are. Identifying them means knowing what created them otherwise you may trash the wrong stuff. I can't help more as I don't use OS x 10.7
