Query about setting up dual monitors

Looking to set up dual monitors atm and running into a bit of trouble, hoping you guys can help.

I have two monitors, one of which is currently connected via VGA cable.
I am looking to connect my second monitor to the same card.
There is a HDMI slot and DVI slot available.
I have a spare VGA cable.

Can I connect my second monitor to the free slot using the spare VGA cable and buy a VGA->DVI converter? Or would I need to buy the DVI cable?

I asked about this in the local PC world, and was adamantly told this was not possible as one input would cancel out the other, and that I would need a professional splitter available online.
So I tested this at home with my HD TV and the HDMI slot. Currently I have dual screens running on the HDMI slot and VGA slot, so that worked fine but my tv is way too big for the desk.

So what should I be doing next?

    Hi there,

a few months ago I set up a dual monitor system for a guy, and I'm pretty sure that he used the VGA connection for one monitor and the DVI for the second...

What model of graphics card do you have?

    ASUS AMD Radeon HD 6770

Atm the HDMI port and VGA port are working at the same time, so I am assuming dual monitors are supported.

Bunch of forum posts online saying it should work fine too.

I would just rather spend €20 on a VGA->DVI converter than €50 on a DVI cable.

Unlikely i know, but if you are in dublin any time soon i have a spare DVI cable, and VGA-DVI adaptor that you can take away for free if you can collect?

Just to confirm what I'm asking.

Should I buy the DVI cable?
    or
Can I just buy the VGA to DVI adapter, because I already have a VGA cable?

It should be fine, though you will get a slightly better picture with the DVI cable.

    What monitors are they?

Both AOC LCD monitors. Main one is currently hooked up with VGA cable.

    Got it sorted.

Went back to PC world, picked up the €15 adaptor, told a different guy my plan and asked would the adaptor suit me. He said "Yeah, I can't think of why it wouldn't".

Depends on who you get I suppose!
