Hey, I'm heading into second year in one of the BA courses in nuig. I was just wondering if someone knows what the story is with not doing two other modules for second year? I have no idea what the story is! Any help much appreciated :D

Hi, well I think most BAs with specialisms work in the following way:
With a BA Connect, you do 60 credits, divided up as follows:
    (1) Specialism - 10 credits (5 credits in Semester 1 and 5 in Semester 2)
    (2) Subject 1 - 25 credits
    (3) Subject 2 - 25 credits

Students not doing a specialism would have 30 credits per subject instead of 25. What this means for you is that you drop one 5-credit module per subject. The wisest thing to do is drop one per semester, rather than try and drop both in the one semester. Although it might seem that you're doing less in Subject 1 and Subject 2, you have actually the same workload with your specialism factored in.

As a Connect, you'll automatically be registered for your 10 credits for your specialism. You should then have a chat with the 2BA co-ordinators for Subject 1 and Subject 2 to clarify which module you can drop. Some subjects may have core modules you cannot drop.

Hope this hasn't made it seem more confusing.
    Best of luck!

    Hi,

I'm heading into my final year of BA Connect in September. Second year for me went like this: one department (Spanish) had a set module for BA Connects to drop, the other (French) gave Connect students the chance to choose which module they figured they would benefit the least from.

The 'choice' from the French department was between elective modules - the core language modules were obligatory for everybody.

The best thing to do is ask at the first meeting with your other subjects in September. Some departments mightn't be familiar with how Connect credits work (although maybe they will be more familiar now that the programmes have been in place a little longer); I had to ask my co-ordinator to e-mail one of my departments before I got the go ahead to drop a module.

    Best of luck with it!
