If anyone would like to do an interesting cycle in Dublin I see the Green Loop Cycle, as its called, is running again for Bike Week on 24th June at 11.00, starting and finishing in Phoenix Park. I did it last year and it was a revelation that such a long off-road cycle could be acomplished in Dublin. It takes in the 2 canals and some parks in between. Its a 42km spin and is sign posted all the way round. The is more information here http://www.irishtrails.ie/Trail_Events/Green_Loop_Cycle_An_Ceangal_Glas_.html. I see pre-registration is required but it is free.

Hey dc2 can you let me know how true this is?
There are some uneven surfaces on the route so the use of a mountain bike or hybrid is recommended

Can you tell me what level of fitness is required to the this whole circuit? I have few 'leisure' or weekend cyclists that are interested.

Yes that above statement has a few roadies worried alright..... Do let us know what the terrain is like too

It's crazy that this is been linked in with a family event in the park but it lacks any detail of if the route is family friendly -- ie what closed gates and other pinchpoints are there?

Not just for cargo bikes and trailers, but the last time I tried Royal Canal with the baby seat on the back of my hybrid, I just about got it past the gap beside the gate heading westbound just after you cross the M50, around Castleknock.

OK - the route is largely on a hard surface byt there is a section of about 5km on the Royal Canal which is unsurfaced - see picture - https://picasaweb.google.com/117190986377171064165/June172012#
The route could be ridden on any bike off course but for comfort something that can handle undurfaced terrian is recommended - e,g, a mountain bike, a cyclocross bike or a hybrid.

Regarding fitness - the route is virtually flat (with the exception of one or two minor small hills.) If you can cycle (at a comfortable pace) for 3 hrs it should be no problem. Terrain is mostly hard surface, apart from a section of the Royal Canal as described above.

Most of the gates are open for the event - there may be some kissing gates which are not. It is NOT all traffic free so if your family is OK with some traffic and can cycle approx 42km then there should be no problem. It is not intended that small children should cycle this route but you should be able to get around with a seat on the back.

    I hope this answers everyone.

hi dc2, will there be any refreshments supplied along the route or is it best to carry your own?

Hi Shamalam - as far as I am aware there will be a drinks stop at St Cathrines Park near Lucan. Not sure what is being provided so I'd suggest bringing some food and a drink just to be sure.

I cycled this yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Well done to all involved for organising the event.
