Dunnes are currently selling the Panasonic DMP BD75EB-K Blu Ray player at half price €50. I bought one today and its a really fantastic player, it's really thin and keep in mind it retails for 65 pounds on Amazon UK. I don't know how long the offer is on for but you would be a fool to pass this up

Do people stlll buy or rent DVDs? We had kids here the other day and had to go find the remote for the DVD player - hadn't used it for a year or so. We seem to always stream or download movies or TV series. We are both over 60 so it's not like we are cool and trendy or anything.

Is this across a cross the country promotion? Great value.

Well I bought mine in Dunnes Kilkenny so I assume its countrywide, i don't really know to be honest.

It's a blu ray player not a DVD player.

Cheers OP - Picked one up in Cornelscourt earlier. I got an additional surprise in that it also includes 2 blu-rays - 2012 and Battle Los Angeles. 2 left on the shelves after I got mine.

The Blu ray section in HMV in Dundrum went from zero to small to medium to small and now approaching zero again. It's tiny! The Blu ray section in Tower is gone. They gave up on the format a long time ago.

I forgot to mention the 2 free blu rays inside!! Thanks for that Donnacha

Sure does - haven't updated firmware yet - tested with 2 different MKVs and both played flawlessly- Sons of Anarchy(Pilot) and Games of Thrones(Battle for Blackwater)

    It plays: JPEG, MP3, DivX/DivX HD2/MKV
I've tested DivX AVI files and MKVs - both fine. If you want me to test out and other file formats then let me know.

Anyone know if this BD player can be made region free with a code? I'm still looking for a reasonably priced BD player that can be unlocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

AFAIK you can't multi-region blu-rays just the DVD part of it. I think you need a chip to make a blu-ray region free.

Google tells me that even multi region of DVDs on this model is tricky as there is no standard code available that can be entered via the remote - it would appear ebay is your friend for some special use once/twice remotes that will unlock dvd to multi-region.

None in stock in Tralee - disastrous electrical line up in there!!

Bought one earlier in Ashleaf and haven't had time to hook it up yet, there was only one left at the time.
Can't fault this price for a BD player with 2 free discs, apparently its a fast loading one as well.
Outputs are a bit sparse, hdmi/network/usb/rca, No digital audio also no HDMI cable included.

I have a different Panasonic Blu-ray player myself and the aspect ratio control has been a disappointment on it. Blu-Ray is a dead format and it never took off. Physical media is dying off and is only popular in Ireland due to our 3rd world broadband infrastructure.

Old Lidl DVD player I had, had poor aspect ratio controls.
It was stuck to using the DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) which was encoded in the file. It that was encoded wrongly, you got the wrong shape.

If you have a lot of errant files you might need a better solution, but... for one-off use, the quickest utility I found was "MPEG4 Modifier" from http://moitah.net/ (requires .NET ver2).
Open your .avi with that, set the DAR to correct value and save the file [maybe with new name for safety]. The process just takes a few seconds.

    Hope that helps a little.

Aspect ratio control? Why would you want to change the aspect ratio on a Bluray?

Eh? What? How does a poorly designed player firmware have anything to do with the worldwide acceptance of a physical distribution format?
