    Hi guys,

Mate is in the market for a new family car for himself and he's at a bind what to get.

He does know it has to be a diesel, does a lot of motorway mileage, around 30-40k a year, and a family sized saloon or hatchback for the kids and stuff.
He's been looking at a couple of Lagunas and Insignias but recently a 2010 1.6tdi highline caught his eye.

Fully loaded, leather and all that jazz and decent mileage, circa 30k km, priced at 23k but he reckons he could get it for 22.

I've seen the car and it's tidy enough, an Irish car with a dealer fsh.

So anyone know of anything he should be aware of, common issues ? As it's a late version of the model I reckon all the niggly things should be gone, dmf due to what will be his style of driving should be ok?

Any other cars he could look at in this area and price range? The Insignias in this range seem to be relatively high mileage.

    Clutch/Fly wheel,
    Handbrake Button,
    Turbo,
Key module (When you turn the key to start it won't work)

    All common problems. :)

No but the DMF would possibly be an issue as in all modern diesels.

This time 2 years ago I bought a 2008 highline passat with 10k more km

Its a diesel with full leather etc, 1.9l

It cost 17250k. So the price you mention might seem a bit high?

Other than the handbrake button that has just started giving problems in last few months, I have not had any issues with it at all

I know a lot of people have complained about the front seats being uncomfortable on longer trips, but neither myself or my passengers have found this to be the case, infact the drivers seat has so many options regarding position and height and lumbar support etc etc that I find it great

I find it pretty decent on consumption also - i probably do 55/45 motorway/non motorway driving and average 5.9l per 100km. I could easily get that down also and have often done so when testing to see how my driving style effects consumption

Cheers rob, when he mentioned he was looking at it I had a look the various sites and it does seem to be one of the cheapest, with below average miles.

He could get a top spec Opel Insignia Elite for that sort of money too:

My 2.0 TDI Comfortline 2006 model has over 220,000 km on it now (bought it 4 years ago with 56k on it) and it is still going strong!

Yep the DMF went but that's common to all modern diesels

One of the injectors was on the way out too but that's a known issue and was covered under a VW recall - won't affect a 2010 model though as it has the newer Common Rail engine

Aside from that, the only things I've had to do are the consumables like tyres, suspension bits and the timing belt (due again actually), It does get serviced on-time every 3/4 months though at a main dealer. Regular and proper servicing is a must.

I do a LOT of mileage in it and it has plenty of power, comfortable, lots of space etc. Maybe I've been lucky but I can't fault it. :)

They are a good, well proven car in my opinion.

They are easy and cheap to fix (relative to other cars in the class) when they do break down in our experience as well.

Which reminds me George, I need to talk to you about the timing belt/service. I was meant to get back to you but things have been hectic the last few months.

I'll PM ya in a few days to check if the prices you gave me before Xmas are still the same :)

    The prices haven't changed ;)

Did he look at a Mondeo ? Nicer drive than either passat or insignia and plenty of room in them too, should be able to get titanium spec for that money

While it is a nice car to drive I personally think the Mondeo is very over-rated. It feels too big and clumsy. It has a crap interior especially base spec. The 1.8TDCI is a dog particularly in 100ps form. Reliability is questionable. Repair costs are high. Not a good combination.

Brother has 09 mondeo 1.8tdci 125ps for last 2 years only thing he had to do it apart from a service was a brake light bulb , its a zetec spec and i personally see nothing wrong with the interior, almost all base spec cars have crap interiors . I dont think a passat could b classed as a really reliable car either, that button handbrake alone is a nightmare , ah that just my 2 cents worth ! Hope op gets the car he wants and has many happy and safe miles in it .

The 1.6tdi B6 models only have a 5 speed gearbox. Makes them nowhere near as good to drive as the 6 speed B7 model.

Had one for a couple of weeks when they launched that engine and thought it was pretty damn gutless. Overtaking (even on the motorway) needed planning well in advance, and the economy wasn't all that either.

Most of the issues with the Passat were ironed out by 08, so you'd be unlucky to get a bad one after that. If there are any 2.0tdi 110 models around that might be a better buy. Still no rocket, but a bit better than the 1.6.

I could have sworn the 1.6 had the 6s box until I looked at one yesterday. I didnt drive it as he had a 2.0 for 350 euro more with the same miles.

Cheers lads. That accord is a nice looking card.

However after sleeping on it he's now contemplating slashing his budget down to the sub 15k mark and contemplating a focus, so who knows what he'll want tomorrow.
