Hi people, this may sound like a stupid question but how much does it cost to keep a car on the road every year? and can you pay by month or is it only a yearly basis? also how much does a NCT cost and what are the requirements you need to pass it. Thanks for help

Im not sure I understand your question...

Insurance, tax, fuel, maintenance, tyres, depreciation etc are impossible for anyone here to know.

You haven't exactly given us much to go on either!

ya im just looking for a rough estimation. i know its approxiametly 1000+ per year but maybe more for me because ive a claim against me. And i am also wondering about if i could pay monthly instead of yearly. and about the NCT. thanks

Most if not all insurance companies allow monthly payments but most charge you a handsome APR for the privilege.

I always pay my tax annually bit I think you can pay each 3 or 6 months too. Of you pay for 6 months you'll get 2 bills a year & they add up to more than the annual amount. Then it's more expensive again to pay every 3 months

It would also depend on what car you want to drive.

Is it a 1.0 litre? Is it a 3.0 litre?

    Is it petrol? Diesel??

    The N.C.T costs €55.00.

You could get a million different answers to this question. Different type cars cost different amounts to run per year, there is no one size fits all figure.

As the other posters have said, it's hard to answer such a general question, but OP you can probably work out a ballpark figure like so:

    - Insurance: I suggest you run your details through a few insurance company websites to see what your insurance will cost. Most offer the facility to pay via monthly direct debit but this may cost extra.
    - NCT: 55 euro for the test, plus whatever your mechanic charges for the optional pre-test (mine charges about 80 quid), plus whatever repairs are necessary if your car needs a retest. Suggested budget for running repairs and NCTing shenanigans: 250 euro a year at least. As far as requirements go, have a look at the NCT site which has some information you can download at http://ncts.ie/the_test.html
    - Servicing/repairs/parts: Budget at least 200 euro a year or more if you have a lot of mileage. Even the most reliable, frequently serviced car will need parts such as tyres, batteries, lightbulbs, etc from time to time.
    - Tax: Costs at least a hundred, up to nearly a grand depending on the vehicle. Go to https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/menu.do?page=motortaxrates and enter the registration plate of a vehicle to see what it'll cost you to tax before you buy.
    - And of course, last but not least, fuel!

If you're thinking of getting a car for commuting, depending on your circumstances, you might be better off with a tax-efficient commuter pass. Have a look at http://www.taxsaver.ie/

if any one could answer me one more question... What is the (APR) Premium rates that you need to pay an insurer, im unsure of what this means.

APR is interest. If you are paying off €1000 over a year, then expect to pay a total of say €1,100 including interest.
