    Hi everyone,
I have an MSI U130 notebook computer. It recently stopped working. I sent it to Tech-fixers who tild me taht it needed a new hard-drive, which would cost 150 euro!! I'm not willing to shell out thta kind of money on it as I paid only about 200 euro for the computer. Does anyone know of any cheaper quotes?

    Thanks in advance! :)

If that's inclusive of them fitting it & re installing the OS then its pretty reasonable.

Have to agree with Koolkid, you may get it done a little cheaper, but for a new hard drive and a couple of hours work installing the O/S (I'm assuming installing all the drivers & updates also) then it's a fair quote.

    Hard Disc = 50

100 for installation and Reimage.. well, its about right, But shopping around, i'd have done it for 110 (cost of drive +50/60 for install and timeit would take.) for example

Doesn't sound too bad alright, depends on the size of the drive they will replace it with/if its new/second hand etc. I charged someone there 140 for hard disk replacement and os re-install/backup of files etc (new hdd cost me €70) recently

There is a good bit involved in opening laptops/netbooks usually compared to your typical tower pc. It can take a good 10+minutes just to gain access to the HD (and take a mental note of all the bloody screws :pac: ). Then the backing up the old drive (if feasible), reloading Windows, drivers, Additional software is all very time consuming. I think if OP is getting a new hard disk installed for €150 it is not a bad deal, of course doing it yourself will be considerably cheaper, but its not for everyone ;)

What Nick says. Don't forget that these guys diagnosed the issue and have rent to pay, tax to pay, a wage to make and have to provide support in the event that something goes wrong. It's not like it's some punter sitting at home doing it for a nixer. I think that's actually a reasonable enough quote.

    I agree.
It's a reasonable price. If you feel its too expressive compared to the cost of the PC then put the €150 by towards the cost of a new one.

Yeah but jesus €200 to do that! i learned how to build a pc off youtube anyone can. i learned how to take apart a laptop and fix it and put it back together. Fair enough i dont know how to get all the documents back of an old hard drive. But i supppose it all depends on the size hdd your getting doesnt it.

whats wrong with doing it for a "nixer" whatever that means ?:L the guy at home could be more intrested in what hes doing then the guy in the shop doing a piss take.Provide support im pretty sure if something was wrong with your pc afterwards hed help for free..

The netbook cost 200, the shop are quoting 150 to replace and reload the os on the drive. Doesn't sound excessive to me.

Are they not closed now? I went into DID electrical recently in Rathmines where i had work done on my laptop by them but the tech fixers are gone now and DID tech service remains?

Well for a start, the guy doing the nixer would have to diagnose the problem, what if he gets it wrong? Installs new hard drive an laptop still not working right? Now doesn't have a clue whats wrong, OP has nice new Hard Drive an old hard drive, both functional but out €70, an no further forward. Or what happens if nixer man/mate drops the thing an breaks screen/hinges etc? Will he pay to fix it?

If €150 too much to pay, I'd suggest paying another €200 for another 2nd hand laptop, on which Hard Drive could go in a week with no comeback... 1 year warrnaty with new Hard drive

As a person who does quite a few Nixers in pc/laptop repair..There's just as much chance of a repair shop getting it wrong. I won't "charge" unless it's fixed.. I have parts at home from stuff I've bought for laptops that didn't need them I'll use them eventually or myself..

And if I dropped it yes I would pay to fix it..

I still say buy a HDD and DIY.. Not hard.

Fair play to you, you play it straight,

however I've known plenty who don't,

one (extreme case admittedly) even took 2GB RAM from a laptop while doing a nixer for someone, charged for the 'fix' which didn't work, an laptop had then be taken to professional to be repaired properly
