A plane has crashed after touching down at Jersey Airport.

The landing gear on the Blue Islands ATR 42 plane failed to open after what was described by their airline as an "unspecified" mechanical failure.

The flight from Guernsey to Jersey, with 43 people on board crashed on the runway at about 08:30 BST.

I think the use of the word "crash" is way over the top. It says the gear collapsed on taxing. having said that the gear collapsed on a big scale with the wing tip touching the ground. I wonder had the landing any thing to do with it?

You know the closure of jersey airport even for a short time has serious knock on effects.

Things like Newspapers, and stuff like that gets delivered through the airport. many is the time you can't get today's papers because there was for or something.

Also , the Islanders depend on being able to get to/from the mainland .

I can see a lot of peoples weekends ruined because of this .

I think their about to start. Cargo door control panel looks to be inaccessable on the port side. Easier to get to the Fwd Hold from the Emerg exit.

No different from any other type of aircraft i've flown. There are tech issues, but concidering the aircraft are flown for 12 - 14 hours in any working day there are bound to be issues on the law of averages. Most things are MEL'able and can be defered.

On a side note, I was in JER and saw the 42 up on its own gear again - it may well get back in the air. Will need a new prop and gearbox though.
