Something that myself and himself can play whilst drinking beer and have a good old argie bargie over :D He is the king of Monopoly and I am the queen of Scrabble so we've come to a stalemate on those two :o We need something new to pass the lonely nights :D

Myself and the girlfriend used to play backgammon all the time. Its easy to learn and bring on your travels.

I suggest quick and easy games to play if there's drink.
I play Zombie dice and Tsuro with a group, the rules are easy to pick up and they play in 10-30mins with little setup time.

Any of the kids games: Guess who, connect 4 etc are good also as everyone remembers them fondly from their youth. I picked up a generic set of these in argos for 20euro and it had their version of guess who, bingo, connect 4 and another game also

IMO the best two player games are War of the Ring or Twlight Struggle

But then again ,thats just me :) .Check out the link below for two player games.

Race for the Galaxy and Dominion are also good two player games.

Try Carcassonne or Settlers of Catalan. We play both of these with buddies over drinks, or just two player. They don't go on too long, so pretty good for an evening.

    Love backgammon as well.
