New Road Bike - Starting out

    Hi,

I have decided to buy a road bike and do some triathlons or bike races.
I have talked to people on what to look for in a new bike e.g. 10 speeds, shimano brakes, carbon forks, light wheels etc but it all sounds so complex.

Can anyone recommend a decent bike or bike spec for a budget of approx €1000.

Any tips on what to look for or what to avoid? Should I get 'fitted' before I purchase?

At this price point, I'd say Halfords have the best value in a bricks and mortar shop with their Boardman Road Team: www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_789235_langId_-1_categoryId_212536
Currently selling for €1050 with extra discounts available. They also give 15% discount if you have Axa insurance.

Online? This is well thought of around here - The Canyon Roadlite AL 6: www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=2502
    Selling for €999.

How long is a piece of string...? See what you like ... €1000 will get you a damn decent second hand race bike.. Go chat with Nigel .. Dont just dive in to sommit you will regret at a later stage !

What about meeting up with the "Sunday Morning Crew ?"

Sunday morning at the Kingfisher NUIG at 9am...? Plenty of spins to choose from and a good crowd usually ...!

    See you there !:D

What about getting fitted out for a bike? One guy strongly recommended this before making a purchase.

Sounds like a good idea. Never did it myself though - Google was my friend.

You can get an idea of your size required using this website -
    Competitive Cyclist Sizing

In terms of bikes, I'd have a look at websites, such as wiggle and chainreaction cycles. These will give an idea of what you can get for your money. I'd be expecting to get a full shimano 105 groupset.
