Wife managed to loose the remote fob thing for my e90 3 series.

We have the metal key part but no remote unit.

What is the cheapest way to get a new spare? If I buy a remote from ebay is there somebody who can code it?

    Thanks for any help.

From what I know you cannot code the newer BMW keys. They have to done at the factory. So you will have to go to the dealer. At least this was the position a couple of years ago when I looked into it for a friend.

If your in or around dublin that place AutoKey (http://www.autokey.ie/) on the naas road can supply and code a key for your car. They will need access to the vehicle to read the codes from the CAS. Drop them an email and they'll give you a price.

If you're trying autokey.ie also try the dealer, it might actually be cheaper.

As for buying a remote on EBay, yes you can reprogrammed the remote to unlock the doors, any remote the same era of BMW will work on another BMW once programmed. However separate to the remote section there is a little chip that allows the key to start the car, it is part of the EWS system.

It is important to make the distinction between the remote function & engine starting function.

In a car like the e90 up to 10 keys can prorgrammed to the car, this is done in the CAS module as mentioned previously. When you buy a key from the dealer the engine start function will work "straight out of the box", but you will have to program the Remote locking/unlocking function. With the slot type key it gets programmed after a few seconds in the slot.
