Manchester: Trains, Jodrell Bank etc

I'll be going to Manchester in a few weeks and I have a few questions that hopefully someone here can answer:

    1. Trains: Is there something like a three day unlimited travel ticket I can got for TransPennine Express/Northern Rail that can be used for central and greater Manchester? I'm not sure what the best ticket is to buy, and the idea of having to buy separate single tickets for each journey seems like a bit of a hassle!

    2. Jodrell Bank: Has anyone gone here using the train? I'm hoping to get the train to Goostrey, and was wondering if the 40 minute walk from the station is actually 40 minutes? Also, I want to see Macclesfield on the same day (still using public transport) and was wondering if this would be possible going on from Jodrell Bank?

I'd be really grateful for any info anyone can give me!

There are a large number of unlimited travel day tickets available in the Greater Manchester area for bus, train, tram (metrolink) and combinations. The TfGM website has a list of them here: http://www.tfgm.com/journey_planning/tickets_day_adult.cfm?submenuheader=1

You need to figure out which of these you are likely to use to get the ticket that suits your requirements best.

Both Jodrell Bank and Macclesfield are in Cheshire not Greater Manchester so most of the above tickets do not cover them. For the day you wish to visit these I sugest the GM Wayfarer ticket which covers a wider area. it costs 10.00 where an off peak rail return from Manchester to Goostrey is 9.30

For the other days either a rail ranger if you only want to use rail (and tram in city centre) or one of the System One day saver tickets Train+Tram or Train+Tram+Bus.

of note is that all of the above are off peak so not valid before 09.30 on weekdays.

It appears there is no closer transport link than Goostrey station. If you like long walks then I imagine it is doable on a good day but I would say arranging a taxi might be a better option.

To get from Jodrell to Macclesfield there is an hourly bus to Macclesfield from Chelford which is a similar distance as Goostrey so probably another taxi or a long walk by train it would require going via Stockport.

the traintaxi website http://www.traintaxi.co.uk/index.php gives details for local taxis from rail statons.
