New boiler needed!

I need to replace my gas boiler after nearly 15 years of faithful service. The question is do I stay with Bord Gais or take on Electric Ireland? Any advice is welcome, and a ball park cost of the replacement would be great too.

    Thanks everyone.

If you want to keep costs down and have the money (I mean, not looking for the gas suppliers payment schemes) it will be cheaper to go with a local independent installer

    +1 on that.
My sisters neighbour was quoted 2900 for a Glow-Worm yesterday from BG (sierra) one of the cheapest boilers out there.

ask around, 2900 pays the installer , bg, sierra etc etc, cut out the middle man and get quotes direct from the installers. A glow worm 18kw high efficiency boiler with chemical cleaning and an inhibitor installed should be around the 1800 mark. You should be able to get similar makes fitted for around the same money. make sure you get the chemical clean done aswell though otherwise your warranty is invalid. Ive heard of lads quoting 1400 and 1500 for installs but with no chemical cleaning or inhibators which can really cause serious problems down the road. hope this helps.

Financially it makes no sense to go with a utilities provider for a boiler. They are making twice. They are making on you by singning you into a contract and no doubt they are making on the boiler installer. Plus... Because they installed the boiler they now know when its service is due. This forces you to service the boiler on time every year.

If your dire for a boiler go speak to your credit union. Even if you owe a lot of money. Sometimes they can agree a seperate loan plan for the boiler.

Are you joking €1800? Flush, boiler, inhibitor, pump, safety valve, vessel, possibly new non return and auto vent, fill it, fire it, balance system, commission boiler. It's a race to the bottom in this industry now. Pay cheap price get a cheap job. OP get a recommend heating contractor in not a bathroom plumber. You don't want someone to come in throw a boiler on the wall and feck off and never come back if you have any issues. If the job is done right the boiler will last 15 years plus.

I often fitr boilers for 1800 and i do it properly every time with a flush, inhibitor balancing and commissioning. An auto airvent is about €5 and takes probably 15 seconds to fit and the same for a none return valve. The chemicals come to about €100 and the boiler is around 800-900. So I cant see where the problem is in the price. Thats a days work , maybe return the next morning if there was something you didnt expect to come across to finish buut nine times out of ten its done in a day.

Tax, insurance, pension, etc aswell. Nixer price. I couldn't power flushing, change the boiler and the other things that go with it in a day, not possible to do the job properly. As I said you get what you pay for. Your idea of a "proper job" and mine would differ hugely.

Good call, I will definitely second that. The earliest that I have completed a proper powerflush is about 3pm and that is on a small system. To complete a powerflush and a boiler swapover, it is definitely a two day job.

Gone_fishing: Are you gas rating the new boiler and commissioning as per MI's? To complete all in one day, you have completely powerflushed the system, every radiator individually and got them to within a minimum of 20% TDS of the mains water. You can re-done the flue and cemented same. You have installed the condensate pipe as per MI's. You have re-balanced the complete heating system to give a 20C ΔT instead of a 11C ΔT to suit the new condensing boiler.

That is most certainly a lot of work in one day, bearing in mind you cannot do anything with system while the system is being flushed! You need the old boiler running to do a hot powerflush.

Lads there is a boiler i do for €1800. That's 2 days to install. Sentinal x800 and x100. Now im sure if i had people working for me the install cost would rise. It pays my 2 days pay with a small profit for my company. Im still loosing out. Lost a job recently because someone fitted a boiler for €1100. Now explain that one.

€1,100 for a boiler swap over is closing three valves below the boiler and hanging a new one, re-opening the valves and walking away from it. It is also hanging a piece of crap on the wall. If someone is willing to handover their €1,100 of hard earned smackaroonies for that kind of job against paying for a proper installation, then more fool them.
I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Jayzus tonight. Thanks for all the posts. I'd like to think that Bord GAis would just be the best and safest option to go with, but they pissed me off previously, and appear to have done like wise to many more. Need to decide sooner rather than later though.

Off topic i'm looking to move existing boiler from upstairs to the kitchen and replace with a Viessmann

to include 9 new rads zoned system with TRVs and new cylinder maybe some

extra pipe work what would be a rough price?? house is 1150sq feet. Cheers.

Why would you BG are the best and safest option, the guy who fits your boiler is just a contractor of another contractor that BG uses!

I would have said ask around for recommendations in your area for a good reliable independent installer, who has a good track record. (RGI of course)

Some of the guys on here are ***** in my book too (the ones I know that is)

Although careful Gary71 doesn't arrive in his swim shorts again:rolleyes:

Very hard to say without a survey but it would be more than €1800.
