Former preacher turned atheist.... the man who jokes he went around to people houses giving out bibles.... and then later had to go around to take them back again.... and writer of "Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists" and "Losing Faith in Faith" ... and Husband to Annie Laurie Gaylor who is his co-founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.... will be visiting the "Is God Imaginary" forum as a guest speaker.

Dan's debate with the unfortunately named Kyle Butt is worth a watch if you want to fill time between now and then. He also appeared at recent atheist conventions including Australia and last month in Cologne.

The forum recently saw Leo Igwe show up as a guest poster and Dan too should hopefully be answering many questions from other users, so sign up if you have anything to say or ask. He and Leo in fact appeared to be developing a close friendship in Cologne where I saw him he press a copy of his book on Leo.... which was fortunate as Leo had given his own copy to his father.... himself a strong theist.... who had then refused to return it because it had put him on the path to "reason" and he did not want to let it go.

He is tentatively scheduled to visit the forum to engage in dialogue starting on Tuesday, June 18/19th - Not as yet sure what time but I will keep this thread updated as I find out anything more. Dan thought that the topic of "religious experince" might be a good area of focus.

Meanwhile Leo periodically returns to his guest speaker thread so feel free to leave any comments or messages of support for him there on his Campaign for Humanism and Reason in Nigeria.

If you sign up and have any trouble then feel free to PM me over there as I am one of the forum moderators under the name IrishMauddib.

No offence but I've never heard of any of those people or that forum.

    But plug away, I guess.

Indeed, they are more relevant in an american context and are likely only of interest to atheists here who follow the religion V atheism stories from the US. Not everyone here will know him unless they are interested in a certain part of the discourse on atheism.

Barker runs Freethought Radio a weekly show, he would be known to most people interested in that or the Atheist Experience show.

The Freedom From Religion foundation would be known to anyone interested in the legal side of the battle in America. They work a lot with litigation enforcing Seperation of Church and State and taking certain types of religious instruction out of schools. They were also a great support for example to the teenage girl recently who was bombarded with death threats for trying to take some religious signs out of her school and I believe have offered her a scholarship to support her in the future. Anywhere where the Creationists attempt to strong arm their agenda into the school curriculum you will likely hear these names too.

I know I personally follow that discourse with interest and some others here do too, and it is more those that would be interested in an online discussion with Barker. I thought it relevant enough to mention anyway for anyone interested.
